Hyderabad: After two thrilling games that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Indian women’s hockey team now turns its attention to a crucial encounter against Wales in their final Pool B match of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 qualifiers in Hyderabad, Telangana. The match, scheduled for March 11, will decide whether India secures a place in the semi-finals.
With four points from two games and a good goal difference, India is currently comfortably at the top of the Pool B standings. However, the path to the knockout round is not yet sealed. The upcoming game against Wales will be crucial and the hosts will be aiming to put in another strong performance in front of their home crowd.
The tournament format allows only the top two teams from each pool to advance to the semifinals. For India, the equation is pretty simple. A win or even a draw against Wales will confirm their qualification for the next round. But a loss could complicate matters.
If India lose the game, they will remain on four points and their chances of progress will then depend on the outcome of the game between Scotland and Uruguay. In this scenario, the final ranking could depend on goal difference, something teams always keep in mind in highly competitive tournaments like this.
India’s performance in the qualifiers has been impressive so far. The team started the tournament on March 8th with a confident performance against Uruguay and recorded a confident 4-0 win. The game showcased India’s attacking prowess as well as defensive stability and set a confident tone for the rest of the contest.
Their second game against Scotland proved much more difficult. Both teams fought hard and the competition ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw yesterday. Although India couldn’t get the full three points, the team showed resilience and determination throughout the game.
One of the standout players of the tournament so far has been young striker Sunelita Toppo. The promising attacker showed remarkable confidence and composure, scoring goals in both games and emerging as a key player in the Indian forward line.
India’s attack looked strong overall, with several players stepping up when needed. Lalremsiami, Navneet Kaur and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal have all contributed to the team’s attacking efforts. Their ability to create and convert opportunities has kept the pressure on the opposition defense and helped India maintain a strong presence in the attacking third.
Behind the attack line, the Indian defense has also played an important role in the team’s success so far. The defensive unit remained organized and disciplined and prevented the opponents from creating too many clear scoring chances.
Goalkeeper Bichu Devi was particularly impressive. She made several crucial saves in both games, helping the team maintain its strong position in the group. Her calm presence between the posts has given defenders added confidence.
Another important factor that worked in India’s favor was the enthusiastic support of the home crowd in Hyderabad. Playing in front of passionate fans gave the players an extra dose of motivation and energy. The loud cheers and encouragement from the stands created a lively atmosphere at the venue.
Speaking about the team’s performance and attitude, captain Salima Tete said the team was positive after the first two games of the tournament.
“There is a positive mood in the team after the first two games. The young players are taking advantage of their opportunity and have done very well. The team is enjoying playing freely and that is a very good thing for us,” she said.
Salima also made it clear that the team has its sights firmly set on the larger goal of qualifying for the World Cup and winning the title.
“We want to qualify for the World Cup and become champions. We talk about that when the team is together and that is our goal,” she added.
Historically, India have had a strong record against Wales. In direct duels between the two teams, India has a clear lead with five wins compared to Wales with a single win. Even if the statistics are in favor of the hosts, the team knows that past results do not guarantee success on the field.
Wales will go into the game determined to secure their first win of the season. For them, the game represents a chance to stay alive in the tournament and potentially push for a semi-final spot. This means India cannot afford to take the competition lightly.
The Indian team will likely focus on maintaining their attacking rhythm while remaining disciplined in defense. A balanced approach could prove crucial in ensuring unnecessary pressure is avoided and the desired outcome is achieved.
As the final group game approaches, tension is building among fans in Hyderabad and across the country. With a place in the semi-finals within reach, the Indian women’s hockey team will be aiming to deliver another strong performance and continue their impressive run in the qualifiers.
