Progress on the studio bathroom (it’s a bit messy at the moment)

I’m still over here on the walls of the studio bathroom. I knew this multicolor painted stripe design would be tedious before I started, so it’s no surprise to me that it’s not finished yet. After all, I use 35 different colors and have to mix 25 of them myself.

Also, as I explained a few days ago, I went about this the wrong way. I decided to paint the 10 main colors (the ones I actually purchased) on the walls first so I could estimate how much paint each color would need, and then after those were done, mix the remaining colors with those 10 main colors plus white, black, and any paint samples I have on hand that I might need to add.

I think this would have been a lot quicker if I had mixed all the colors from the start, taped off every other color in those two rows, and finished the other colors after the first few strips had dried. But since my first set of 10 colors was random in color order, it took me longer.

But I’ve finally gotten to the point where I’ve painted all 10 main colors plus about 3 of the blend colors on the top and bottom rows, and now I’ve taped off something that resembles almost every other color.

The good news is that I found that the paint didn’t need 24 hours to dry before I put painter’s tape on it. I use tape for delicate surfaces and it seems to work well as long as I give the paint a few hours to dry completely. I first tried putting the tape on one of the colors after just letting it dry for a few hours, but when I removed the paint nothing came off the paint.

So if that’s consistently true, I can have these stripes painted this morning, let them dry for a few hours, and then come back this evening, have the rest taped off and painted. My goal is to have all of these two rows painted by the time I go to bed tonight.

If I actually manage to do this and don’t get distracted (and I’ll admit, I’ve been very distracted this week), there’s a chance I can paint the entire second row tomorrow, although I expect I may need to do some touch-ups.

But that doesn’t mean that the walls will be completely finished this weekend. I still have to take care of that part of that one wall.

Someone asked me, “Wouldn’t it be better to repair the wall before you start painting?” And the answer is of course: yes. But when have you ever seen me complete projects in an order that actually makes sense? After my wallpaper disaster I really needed a pick-me-up and wanted to see some color on these walls. It’s the fun things that keep me going, so I very often do things in an order that makes no sense to anyone but me. And yet somehow things always seem to work out well in the end.

What’s driving me at the moment is that I want to hang the mirror on the wall by the end of the weekend. I love this mirror, and I think seeing it on the bathroom wall in front of the colorful stripes will be a great reward at the end of such a lengthy project.

I really love this mirror. The frame is perfect and I think it will look very nice in contrast to the stripes. It’s about an inch deep, so it stands out without feeling as heavy as any of the other mirrors I considered.

I’m also really excited about installing this cute little ceiling light. I am very satisfied with this lamp. The material is thick plastic so I think it will hold up very well, especially since it’s only a half bathroom. It doesn’t have to withstand a lot of steam from the shower.

I really wanted to install it as soon as I got home, but I’m waiting until the walls are finished because I’m still on the fence about whether I should paint the ceiling a color other than white.

At this point, it’s difficult to make a decision about the ceiling without seeing the actual finished stripes on the walls. I really need to see how these strips are finished before I make a final decision, but in my head I see pink on the ceiling. I really need to get the entire vanity painted too so I can see the whole thing – vanity and walls – to see if a painted ceiling is the icing on the cake or if a painted ceiling is way over the top.

So that’s progress! I’ll do my best to focus on this bathroom this weekend and we’ll see how far I get.
