The bedroom dresser is being painted (before and after)

I decided on the color of the bedroom dresser and finished it yesterday. As I read the comments on yesterday’s post, I realized that there was no way for me to pick a color that everyone would like. The answers were very different and everyone had a different idea. Some people liked the idea of painting it coral red. Others detested all the color options and said it had to be stained wood. Some people really thought it should be green. Others hated the idea of green. Many people thought it should just be painted a neutral color, but opinions were divided on which neutral color to use. Some thought of a light neutral, others thought of a dark neutral.

In the end I just had to decide what I wanted. That’s what we all have to do with our own houses, right? As much as we would be happy for everyone who comes through our front door ooooohhhh And aaahhhhhh With every decision we make, we know that it is impossible to decorate our homes so that everyone will love every decision we make.

After all that, I chose green. I tried to match it as closely as possible to the fabric I plan to use for the foyer bench. This fabric is from Spoonflower.

So I ended up going with this Glidden color called Moss Point Green.

And…I love it. For some reason it looks brighter in photos than in the room. The room appears darker, but not too dark.

I like it from every direction. It will go well with the foyer bench…of course since I matched the color to the fabric. In the photo below you can see how the fabric is draped over the edge of the bench. And the chapel image also contains a lot of greenery.

And it matches the green of the bird fabric perfectly. I will also add some greenery to the bedding. In fact, I’ll probably use the green fabric that’s on the wallpaper in the photo below.

This is what it looks like from the entrance to the room.

The fabric I want to use as an accent for the bed is this one, also from Spoonflower. It is the exact same color as the green cube fabric I will be using on the foyer bench.

Well, it’s done. And I’m really happy with the result. I know I disappointed a lot of people who thought green was a bad choice, but I really love it and think everything will work once the room is finished.

Plus there’s a lot of green on the wallpaper in the bathroom…

And this green can also be found in the wallpaper in my wardrobe.

Here’s a look at the dresser from when it was in our previous bedroom…

And this is what it looks like now. I found the new drawer pulls at Lowe’s. I had limited options as I had to work with the holes already drilled in the drawer fronts, but I thought these were very pretty and the size suited my needs exactly.

For those of you wondering about the process, I painted the whole thing with a brush (a 2.5″ Purdy wing brush because quality matters) and used Behr Premium Plus paint. Since I used brand new paint that had never been opened before (other than to mix the paint at the store), I did not add any color conditioner to the paint. I used it straight from the can.

To achieve the smoothest possible finish, I took out all the drawers so that the drawer fronts were horizontal, and I made sure to turn off the fan in the room while drying. The longer the drying time, the more time the paint has to level while still wet.

I applied two coats, let it dry for about an hour between coats, and then let everything dry overnight. And then this morning I put the drawers back in place and then installed the new drawer pulls. Since the dresser was previously painted with latex paint and I used latex paint this time, I did very little sanding. I only spot the sanded areas where I could see imperfections in the previous finish, but I didn’t sand the whole thing.

After giving the paint a few days to cure, I go back and apply a few coats of clear coat to just the top. And of course I use my favorite clear coat – General Finishes High Performance Topcoat in a flat finish (affiliate link). If I were painting kitchen cabinets, I would clear coat everything with General Finishes. It provides such a durable finish that I like to use it for cabinets in kitchens and other high-traffic areas and areas where people gather. But for furniture in areas with far less traffic, I think the clear coat is only really necessary on the top to protect the surface from items placed on it.
