Police warn against popular 4×4 accessories

One of the most commonly used accessories by off-road enthusiasts could be punished with a hefty fine by authorities.

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) has issued a warning to motorists who install reflective window coverings, saying the change may breach the Highway Code.

The soft, glossy panels most commonly found on off-road SUVs help deflect the sun’s rays away from the rear cargo area, which often houses a 12-volt refrigerator. They also block the view of traffic from behind and from the side.

“Failure to comply with this Highway Code will result in a fine of $389 and will endanger the safety of vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists/scooters by drastically reducing visibility,” the QPS said in a statement.

However, some have questioned the warning, claiming that the accessories are permitted if fitted to the rear window and cargo area windows behind the C-pillars – provided they are secured and made from non-reflective material.

An online post says Queensland regulations do not require the driver to have visibility out the rear window if the vehicle has compliant wing mirrors, citing the fact that many subways are legally equipped with canopies that block the rear window – including police “paddy wagons”.
