YouTube is in a bit of a difficult situation right now. On the one hand, it encourages developers to use AI tools to create content faster and easier than ever before. On the other hand, it also says it will take action against what it calls “AI slop,” which basically means low-effort, mass-produced videos that don’t add much value.
This contrast is hard to miss. The platform clearly wants more AI-driven content, but only content that feels useful, original and worth watching, rather than content that simply fills space.
So what should we take from this?
YouTube’s CEO said in a recent NYT video interview:
AI can be a tool to produce amazing content or further democratize content creation, but it can also enable the creation of a lot of low-quality content. There are aspects that are not new. The new thing is the volume, but the idea of low-quality content, clickbaity content – we’ve been able to deal with that on YouTube. I also think that we have to have a certain sensitivity. And I would tell you that we’re trying to really find that balance every day, but we’re very, very focused on making sure that when you open the YouTube app, it’s not an AI flooded feed.
The real challenge, however, is not just accepting that low-quality AI content exists. It’s about how much of it there can be. Platforms have always had to deal with mediocre content, but AI is completely changing things. What once took time and effort can now be created in bulk in minutes. An average video is easy to ignore. When thousands of them are uploaded at once, it becomes much more difficult to manage them.
These feel-good words no longer apply the same way
“Delicate balance” sounds great, doesn’t it? It’s pretty calming. But when you actually stop and think about it, the question becomes pretty obvious: What does this even look like in practice? On YouTube, it’s easy to point out the obvious. Fully automated videos, robot voiceovers – of course, that’s AI nonsense. But what about the gray area? A video in which the AI writes the script, edits the clips, designs the thumbnail and a human just sprinkles a little paint over it. Is this a smart use of tools or just a little effort dressed up nicely? Not only is the line blurry, it practically moves as you try to draw it.
The platform already relies heavily on algorithms to decide what to see and what to bury. But when uploads come in at large volumes, even the smartest systems can struggle to keep up. AI content doesn’t arrive with a nice little label saying “I’m generated.” In fact, the more convincing it looks, the harder it is to grasp. A lot of it isn’t obviously bad, it’s just… good enough. And that “good enough” quickly turns into a flood.
The platform has been rewarding volume for years. Post more, stay consistent, keep the machine updated. This is how you grow. And guess what fits perfectly into this system? AI. It allows creators, and let’s face it, content farms, to produce videos at a scale that simply wasn’t possible before. Although the platform says it wants to reduce low-quality content, the way it’s built doesn’t exactly discourage it either.
To be fair, this isn’t YouTube’s first rodeo. It’s dealt with spam, clickbait, and every kind of hack-the-system trick there is. And it has adapted over time. But AI is changing the game. What was once a manageable problem is now multiplied. And this is where the promise of well-being really begins to lose its shine. The intention is undoubtedly there. But right now it feels more like a careful statement than a clear plan. Because recognizing the problem is the easy part. The real test is whether the platform can actually keep it under control before your feed becomes a narrow line of “just good enough” content.
