Following the recent launch of Alexa+ online, Amazon is now bringing its AI assistant to your Ring doorbell. The company has announced a new feature that allows Alexa to answer the door and have short conversations with visitors, even when you’re not home.
The feature, called Alexa+ Greetings, allows Ring doorbells to respond to people at your door using conversational AI. Amazon explains that Alexa can now use the doorbell’s camera and audio feed to detect what’s happening when someone rings and then respond accordingly. For example, you can ask a delivery driver to leave a package at a specific location, tell a salesperson that you are not available, or greet a familiar visitor and take a message.
Amazon says the system is based on a combination of Ring’s existing video summaries and Alexa’s enhanced generative AI capabilities. It’s quite flexible, allowing users to set up custom interactions through the Ring app and tell Alexa exactly how to respond in different situations. The conversations are recorded and saved along with the video clip so users can review the interaction later.
Alexa can open the door on your behalf
Alexa+ Greetings effectively turns Ring doorbells into “an intelligent assistant that recognizes who is at your door, understands what they need, and responds in conversation.” Instead of checking notifications or the doorbell’s live view, Alexa can perform basic interactions on your behalf, which can be useful when you’re away or busy.
The feature shows how Amazon is positioning Alexa+ as a more versatile assistant that goes beyond smart speakers and displays. For Ring users who are already invested in the Amazon ecosystem, it adds another layer of automation at the front door.
If you’re eager to try Alexa+ Greetings, you may have to wait a while. According to Amazon, the feature is currently limited to Alexa+ Early Access users in the US and Canada. It only works on select Ring wired doorbell models, requires a Ring subscription, and only supports English.
