Toyota has introduced a new original accessory after numerous thefts LandCruiser SUVs, and it looks very familiar.
The new anti-theft accessory now listed on the LandCruiser 300 Series accessories page on Toyota Australia’s website – albeit with an image showing a RAV4 – is a steering wheel lock.
Adelaide Hills Toyota is advertising the accessory for $200. For comparison, you can buy steering wheel locks at Supercheap Auto for a price between $25.99 and $159.99.
Toyota promises that its steering wheel lock is “made from automotive-grade steel to ensure strength and durability.”

“An internal spring system ensures the arm extends smoothly with minimal effort, while four-point contact technology ensures a secure and consistent grip on the steering wheel,” the company says on its website.
“The locking system is designed with tamper-evident features to increase security and reliability. The surface is coated with a soft resin finish that prevents scratches or damage during use.”
Toyota states that it ships the steering wheel lock with a fixed set of keys; replacement keys are not available.
Although it looks more impressive than the old-fashioned steering wheel locks that were so ubiquitous in the 1980s and 1990s, it’s still a steering wheel lock.
Luckily, Toyota has previously promised to have developed more anti-theft solutions after previously touting an additional immobilizer.
“Toyota is committed to continually improving vehicle safety and has gradually introduced advanced protective measures across its product range,” the company said in a press release earlier this month.
“In 2025, Toyota has taken further steps to improve the security of several models, including the new HiLux, LandCruiser 300 and LandCruiser Prado, to provide even greater peace of mind for owners,” it continued, without providing specific information on security improvements – perhaps so as not to provide useful information to would-be thieves.
The company worked with police to identify which devices were being used to steal its vehicles and made security improvements to counter their effectiveness.
However, owners of existing vehicles will not be able to take advantage of the improvements made by Toyota because, for example, they are not available as over-the-air software updates.
Currently it’s only the latest generations of HiLux, LandCruiser 300 Series and Prado that have received safety improvements, but Toyota says it plans to introduce changes to other models.
For owners of existing vehicles who have been the victim of theft, Toyota Australia is developing a prioritization system to ensure they receive replacement vehicles as quickly as possible, rather than being stuck in a long queue behind other customers.
The Queensland Police Service confirmed earlier this month it had made seven arrests and laid 380 charges following a spate of thefts in Brisbane late last year.
This was a suspected car theft syndicate that targeted LandCruisers and Prados and stole 60 vehicles worth around $8 million for export overseas, including to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
According to authorities, the stolen vehicles were accessed via the CAN bus port, allowing thieves to take control of the vehicles and disable Toyota’s satellite tracking device.
On December 2, 2025, police observed two suspected stolen vehicles entering a junkyard in Rocklea. Police then discovered a cargo container containing two stolen LandCruisers, hidden behind a facade made of car parts.
Shipping containers containing several stolen vehicles were subsequently located and seized in Brisbane and Melbourne.
