The Smart brand, now a 50:50 joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, returned to Australia in 2024 after a decade-long hiatus.
The brand’s vehicles are imported by LSH Auto Australia, which says it sells more Mercedes-Benz vehicles locally each year than any other dealer group.
The Smart No. 1 and No. 3 are currently the only two models offered locally, with the Pro+ serving as the entry-level model alongside the mid-range Premium and Brabus performance variants in both model ranges.
Both models share the same base as the Volvo EX30 and Zeekr X, with Volvo and Zeekr also owned by Geely.
The two Smarts use the same 200kW/343Nm rear-mounted electric motor, with the #3 Pro said to offer an additional range of 15km over the 420km (WLTP) of the #1 Pro+.
Both SUVs also use a 66 kWh nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) battery.
Standard equipment includes 19-inch alloy wheels, an electric tailgate and a panoramic glass roof.
Smart’s past sales performance in Australia is difficult to estimate because LSH Auto does not report Smart deliveries to VFACTS, the official new vehicle sales data compiled by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).
Smart sales also don’t appear in the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) sales reports, where brands like Tesla and Polestar publish their results.
After the first two models, the Smart range will be expanded locally with the Smart #5 – a competitor to the Tesla Model Y – which was unveiled in August 2024 and was originally scheduled for launch in 2025 before being postponed.
This was announced by LSH Auto Australia Daily Sparkz The Smart #5 is now expected to arrive in showrooms in the second half of 2026.
