Oh my god, how can I review this film without giving anything away? Well, let’s try it.
First of all, I was surprised at how much was added to the second act without staying true to the stage show. The additions to the script are only intended to make it easier for the viewer to understand the story, which can be difficult at times. Unless you’ve seen the show many, many times like I have, it can be difficult to grasp all the nuances and subtleties. And the book is a tough read, but there’s a lot of crap in it. Jon M. Chu and the team have obviously worked hard to ensure that the viewer follows what is really happening. Of course, gaps had to be closed and the story rounded out in order to have enough content for a complete second film.
My favorite part of Evil forever
Let’s talk about my favorite part. I’ve always been a big Fiyero fan. Before Jonathan Bailey, I loved Fiyero. This love goes back to the original Fiyero on Broadway, Norbert Leo Butz. I’ve been waiting for this Elphaba and Fiyero scene for a year. The performance of “As Long As You’re Mine” does not disappoint. I was not alone in this satisfaction. After this epic moment, the crowd in the theater cheered for the first time in the film. The second cheer, of course, came when the main cast hugged after their performance of “For Good.”
The reveal of both the Tin Man and the Scarecrow is better than I expected. And the fact that they don’t betray Dorothy is perfect. Just like in the stage show, Dorothy is just a minor character who shouldn’t be focused on.
If you’ve seen the Wicked special A wonderful night There was a very short preview of the two new songs on NBC. Now that I’ve seen both in their entirety, I can say that they are a wonderful addition to the story. I’m sure”No place like home” And “The girl in the bubble“were written to give Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, the lyricists, composers, etc. a chance to be nominated for an Oscar for Original Song. And that’s okay. Goal achieved.
PS: Don’t be like the people in my theater and go to the bathroom during Ari’s song. This movie is shorter than the first and you can wait until the end. Got it? OK, good. Let’s move on.
Speaking of Oscar: This time Jon M. Chu will certainly be nominated. He is a master of his craft and deserves all the awards.
With that said, I would like to conclude this review as I definitely don’t want to spoil anything for anyone. Just know that Evil forever is brilliant, beautiful and, well, damn good.
