Could that genesis Should the series be crowned by a high-performance station wagon in the future? The G90 wingback concept suggests that there is a chance, no matter how slim it is.
Unveiled late last week, the one-off G90 Wingback officially serves to showcase the brand’s custom one-of-one adjustment arm, however, brand executives said Autocar It wouldn’t be hard to put it into production reality if they could come up with a business model for it.
Currently, the only station wagon in the Genesis range is the G70 Shooting Brake, which should help the brand conquer the European market, where station wagons are known to sell better than their sedan counterparts.
Luc Donckerwolke, Hyundai Motor Group’s chief design officer, says the concept was christened “Dr. Evil” during development and the wingback shows “how Genesis can offer Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with sporty functionality and an aerodynamic and elegant body.”
In addition to a new rear, the Wingback also features wider front fenders that have a cooling gap in front of the front doors. The rear wheel arches appear to have been pumped up, while the rear doors have been changed, with the window line no longer bending upwards and the shoulder crease running straight rather than curving downwards.
Up front there’s a new, more sharply defined and very Acura-like five-point grille and a much more aggressive front bumper design with four slats under the grille, oversized lower air intakes and a set of flics.
At the back, the tailgate is decorated with two large spoilers, while the bumper has a large diffuser flanked by two exhaust tailpipes of different sizes arranged one above the other. The concept vehicle rides on 22-inch alloy wheels with Pirelli 255/35 tires at the front.
Despite its powerful appearance, the Wingback uses a powertrain borrowed from the sedan rather than something warmed up.
The short-wheelbase G90 sedan features a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 producing 279kW and 530Nm, while the long-wheelbase model has a 3.5-litre electric supercharged V6 producing 305kW and 549Nm.
Even if the G90 Wingback somehow makes it into production, it’s unlikely it’ll end up here, as the second-generation G90 is only made in left-hand drive.
