I think I have another day to work on the trim and walls in the bedroom. Of course I thought that before I left last weekend and we’ll see how well that worked out for me. However, I ended up adding more bleed so there was a delay. But now that the trim is done, most of it is sanded, and I just have to finish the caulking and painting (and I have a non-stop day of work ahead of me), I really think I can do it today.
In the meantime, I really need to decide what to do with this dresser and some of you have offered various options and opinions. This is the dresser I will use in the bedroom. It was in our old bedroom, but it has been sitting in my workshop for about a year now.
I wasn’t even sure if I would use it in our new bedroom. I considered getting rid of it and buying something new. But the fact is that I can almost never find something that I like “as is” and that is also within my budget. All the dressers I like “as is” cost well over $1,000, and I just don’t want to spend that money on a new dresser when I already have a perfectly good one.
I really like the height. I think it’s about 45 inches tall, maybe even a little bigger. I love that it has nine drawers. And I like that it’s not too deep. Plus, it’s pretty heavy and sturdy, so not like a Walmart piece of furniture. I don’t think I would find a better device in my price range, so I’ll stick with this one.
Anyway, this dresser will be on the left side of this long wall, directly opposite our bed.
And to the right of the dresser, I will set up my reading nook with this recliner from Interior Define.
And then of course you know the rest of the plan…
I already have almost everything for the bedroom, including the carpet…
And the fabric of the headboard. I will be using this solid orange/coral fabric for the piping cord around the headboard. And then there is the teal velvet fabric for the curtains.
As you can see, I have a pretty consistent color palette. Teal is obviously the main color for the room – upper walls, curtains, armchairs. The orange/coral color is the obvious secondary color – birds in the headboard fabric, piping cord on the headboard, accents on the curtains, carpet, cushions on the lounge chair, lamps on bedside tables, etc.
So with this color palette I’m not sure what to do with this dresser. I know I don’t want teal anymore. I think that would be too much. I was thinking about painting it a really soft orange/coral tone, not nearly as bold as the other orange/coral tones in the room. But since it’s so big, I’m afraid it will look overwhelming, even if it’s a more muted color. Or maybe it doesn’t need to be muted at all. Maybe it needs to be bright orange/coral. Pooh. I just don’t know.
There are also some other colors of fabric for the headboard, such as this pretty green. But if I’m using the green on something large like the dresser, I’ll definitely have to balance that with the green on the bed and probably at least one other spot in the room.
And then the last option would be to paint it white. But you all know how I feel about painting furniture white. This is so hard for me to understand and it goes against every impulse I have. White furniture is just not my thing.
So I’m not sure which direction to go with this. If I were forced to choose at this moment, I would probably use the soft green of the headboard fabric and then incorporate that green into other areas in the room, such as accent pillows on the bed.
I don’t want to end up in a situation like the one I had with the closet where I tried out 20 different paint colors. I want to make a decision, stick with it and get it done. I just have a hard time imagining any of these options. It would be much easier if I had the chair in my hand, but it could still take two weeks to arrive. So until then I only have a small fabric sample.
By the way, what do you think of this light green? Or would that be too big a third color? Would that throw off the balance of the entire room and the color palette I chose for the room? I should mention that there is no green on the carpet. However, it is the same light brown color as the headboard fabric. Maybe that’s another option I should consider.
