The ax has officially fallen Toyota Fortuneralthough the HiLux Ute-based seven-seat off-road SUV is unlikely to return to the Japanese automaker’s lineup.
But with the heavily redesigned ‘new generation’ HiLux recently launched, the idea of a Fortuner taking its best bits from Toyota’s latest ute is likely to be very interesting to buyers.
In fact, despite the discontinuation of the Fortuner in 2025, sales of the large off-road SUV rose 12 percent year-over-year.
As well as fresh-looking front and rear sections, the latest HiLux benefits from updated chassis, new safety technology and an all-new interior – while the 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine is used across the ute range.

These digital renderings by artist Theottle give an idea of what a new Fortuner could look like with the HiLux 2026’s exterior changes.
But like the now-defunct Fortuner, this one also features unique taillights and a special tailgate to distinguish it from its siblings.
However, the idea of a Fortuner with the HiLux’s new look appears to be a simple modification, as some previous generation small cars in Thailand were “upgraded” to the latest model by simply swapping some lights, bumpers and side panels – even before the new model was available in dealers.
