2026 MG 7 price and specifications

MG has lined up the launch of one final new model for 2025, this time entering a segment it hasn’t competed in since the British-born car brand took over under Chinese ownership.

The middle class MG7 The liftback, which goes on sale this month, is available in a single, well-specified trim level at the price $44,990 before on-road costs. MG has not yet confirmed exactly when the first customer deliveries will begin.

Despite being similar in size to the Toyota Camry, the MG 7’s sporty positioning makes it more of a competitor to the Hyundai Sonata N Line, priced at $55,750 on-road, or the Skoda Octavia RS, priced at $62,990 off-road.

The combination of sporty features and design and a practical liftback body style could appeal not only to Octavia RS buyers but also to disenfranchised Kia Stinger and Volkswagen Arteon owners.

The front-wheel drive mid-size car is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 170kW of power and 380Nm of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

This means our MG 7 has less power than the 2.0-litre engine in China, which produces 192kW and 405Nm. It also falls short of the Sonata’s 213kW and 422Nm outputs.

This is the first time you’ll be able to buy a new mid-size combustion engine car in Australia since it came under Chinese ownership. It comes onto the market around 20 years after the old ZT sedan and station wagon were phased out.

The original MG 7, which was produced from 2007 to 2013, was actually based on the ZT/Rover 75, so you could definitely consider this new car a belated successor.

Those looking for a mid-size electric-powered MG sedan can opt for the IM5 instead, priced from $60,990.
