As the world of luxury watches grows larger every day, with innovative new brands and watchmakers reinterpreting a centuries-old art, being a pioneer with over a century of history adds an extra layer of heritage and authenticity. For Zenith and its now 160-year legacy, watchmaking has become the perfect balancing act between tradition and innovation. The new limited editions of the DEFY Zero G Sapphire take one of Zenith’s most stunning complications and envelop it in crystal-clear art. Each model is offered in two variants, one transparent and one in deep blue sapphire, and is limited to just ten pieces worldwide.
At the heart of it all is the Zero-G movement, a concept that Zenith introduced back in 2008 and which still seems to be ahead of its time. Instead of using a tourbillon to compensate for positional errors caused by gravity, Zenith’s system eliminates this problem by keeping the regulating organ perfectly straight through a gimbal-mounted “Gravity Control” module. Think of it like a marine chronometer scaled down to the size of a wristwatch, with a miniature gear that guarantees constant torque regardless of position. It’s one of those mechanisms that you could stare at for hours, not only admiring the complexity but also understanding how something so technical can feel perfect in motion.
The sapphire design makes this movement a show. The transparent model allows light to stream through every corner of the El Primero 8812S movement, while the blue sapphire version looks almost ethereal with its lapis lazuli dial sprinkled with gold-like pyrite. The 46mm sapphire case may sound bold, but on the wrist it looks surprisingly light, another illusion that fits the Zero G’s theme. In a world where many brands chase spectacle, Zenith has achieved something more subtle.
