Your next Galaxy Z Fold could get a 20% flatter fold

Samsung Display used CES 2026 to unveil a foldable OLED that could make the Galaxy Z Fold 8 wrinkle less in everyday use. The main message is simple: the fold depth appears to be about 20% shallower than the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

This kind of change is important because the crease is still the first thing you notice about a big, bright foldable screen. In videos and games it can look like a dark trench and it can cause a bright reflection when light hits the hinge area.

However, this is not yet set for the next Galaxy Fold. ZDNet Korea reports that Samsung’s MX division could make a decision by the end of the first quarter of 2026 and that cost increases associated with the new build are being weighed, among other things.

The materials behind the fold

It’s not just about tightening the hinge. The work takes place in the display stack, where the layers have to be bent thousands of times without being permanently fixed.

One change concerns the optically clear adhesive between the layers. The idea is to allow the stack to bend and recover more gently as it folds, so that over time the bend doesn’t penetrate as deeply into the line.

The report also points to a more stable reinforcement layer. Instead of relying on a plastic PET film, the Samsung display is bonded to a metal plate under the panel for a firmer hold.

Apple fans should temper their expectations

Whenever Samsung Display introduces new foldable technology, Apple speculation quickly follows. This time, the same report argues that this particular panel is not suitable for Apple’s first foldable iPhone.

The reasoning is based on different reinforcement approaches under the umbrella. While the tech is impressive, it’s better read as Samsung pushing its own foldable devices, rather than as a sneak peek at Apple’s hardware.

Check out the Q1 decision

If the Galaxy Z Fold 8 fold is your dealbreaker, the most important date isn’t a launch rumor, but the decision window. By the end of March 2026, we should have a clearer idea of whether Samsung is willing to absorb the higher costs of shipping this thinner, foldable panel.

If you’re buying soon, check out the best foldables now if you can’t wait for Samsung’s next foldable flagship. If you can wait, keep an eye out for supply chain conversations and any hints that the Fold 8’s display stack is getting a meaningful overhaul.
