Electric vehicle brand Xpeng has previewed its new flagship SUV and its latest combustion engine model.
The Xpeng GX is the Chinese brand’s “flagship AI luxury six-seater SUV” and is based on the Chinese brand’s new SEPA 3.0 Physical AI architecture.
Although no powertrain details have been released, it is believed that the GX will be an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) that features a small internal combustion engine that only serves as a generator to charge the battery.
It is understood that the SEPA 3.0 architecture has been developed for a number of the brand’s EREVs. The GX could be Xpeng’s only model without a purely electric counterpart.

EREVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) have become very popular in China, leading previously EV-only brands such as Xpeng and Zeekr to launch such vehicles. Xpeng launched an EREV version of its spacious X9 people mover late last year.
Xpeng appears to have released some images of the GX before it was revealed in a Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filing, which often contain images that are significantly less flattering than press photos.
The images released by Xpeng show a champagne-colored GX with clean flanks and blacked-out C and D-pillar trim, giving it a resemblance to the Range Rover.
There’s a full-width taillight bar and slim headlights, while the GX may be one of the last vehicles to launch with retractable door handles, as they will be banned in China from January 1, 2027.
With an expected length of more than five meters, the GX will enter a busy segment in the Chinese market and, amusingly, will be one of the few models in the segment without a “9” in its name.
The Xpeng GX will take on the Denza N9, Zeekr 9X, Aito M9 and Li Auto L9. So far, none of these vehicles have been confirmed for the Australian market, although local outposts Denza and Zeekr have hinted that they are looking at their respective flagship SUVs.
Further information on the GX will be announced closer to its launch in China. The main specifications will appear in the MIIT filings.

The claimed range for all-electric driving is 452km on the milder CLTC cycle, with a total combined range of 1602km.
With the GX, Xpeng will also have four SUVs in addition to three cars and a people mover.
The brand currently only sells one model here – the G6 mid-size electric SUV – but has confirmed the X9 people mover and the G9L large SUV for launch in Australia in 2026.
It’s unclear if the GX is coming here. In this case, Xpeng may have to change the name that is currently used for another Lexus luxury SUV.
