Where the heart is was supposed to take place in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, but was actually filmed right here in Central Texas. Although the film was released in theaters in 2000, there are still many filming locations in and around Austin.
Here are the filming locations of Where the heart is!
- The Walmart was located in Lockhart in the film, but has since been converted into a Walmart District Court Facility. The newer one Walmart Supercenter is not far from the original Walmart location.
- When Willy/Billy arrives in “Nashville,” he is actually on Sixth Street in Austin.
- Novalee and Forney put a Christmas tree in front of the door Caldwell County Courthousewhich you can see in the background of some shots.
- The Majestic Hotel, where Novalee goes to Forney after his sister’s death, is actually a building on the square in Lockhart 101 East San Antonio Street.
- The university at the end of the film was supposedly on the East Coast, but was actually Baylor University in Waco.
- The church where Americus is left in the manger is located at Main and W. Pecan Streets.
Before his train accident, Billy and his girlfriend stop at El Nopalito Verde. There’s an El Nopalito in New Braunfels, but the restaurant’s facade doesn’t look the same.
We are not sure what was used for the house/library where Forney lives/works.
