Volkswagen Amarok EV and PHEV vehicles are excluded…for now

The current generation Volkswagen Amarok According to company management, it is not offered with an electric or plug-in hybrid drive.

As recently as April 2025, Volkswagen said it was “seriously considering” an electric (EV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Amarok – but these projects now appear to have been canceled.

But while Volkswagen has ruled out electrified versions of the current Amarok, it has left open the possibility of an Amarok EV or PHEV being developed for the next-generation ute – all but confirming that a new-generation Amarok is on the cards for the 2030s.

“Stefan Mecha, our new CEO (Volkswagen Commercial), has made it clear that the PHEV and BEV Amarok is no longer being discussed at this point in time, in this generation,” said Nathan Johnson, Volkswagen Commercial brand director Daily Sparkz.

The decision comes just months after Ford released a plug-in hybrid version of the Ranger – the Amarok’s non-identical twin.

While Mr Johnson would not be interested in confirming a new generation Amarok, he said that “there is an opportunity” to reconsider an Amarok BEV and PHEV in the future.

“At this point it is a global decision.”

Despite the possibility of a low and zero emission vehicle as part of its portfolio, Johnson says the company is well positioned for the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) – a law introduced by the Australian government to incentivize the introduction of more efficient cars.
