Video: The off-road battle for Beer O’Clock Hill is putting car manufacturers in trouble

Australia’s best-selling small cars have been pitted against each other in one of the industry’s toughest off-road vehicle tests.

However, not everyone tested made it the first time.

The video, published on Daily Sparkz The YouTube channel was filmed on location at The Springs 4×4 Park – in The Glen in Queensland’s Granite Belt, south of Warwick.

Within the park is Beer O’Clock Hill, considered one of the toughest off-road mountain trails in the country, allowing for continuous back-to-back testing within the confines of private property.

All car manufacturers were invited to take part and made a variety of models – from the Mahindra Pik-Up to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 – available for testing on the day.

But one of the favorites, the outgoing Toyota HiLux GR Sport, suffered a mechanical problem while attempting to drive on the track.

Although manufacturers were offered the option of fitting off-road tires – as this is arguably the most popular modification made by owners – the HiLux was one of the few to brave the mountain with stock tires.

After the main event, the HiLux returned for a second attempt, although Toyota was unable to provide a new generation model in time for the event.

Other models included in the comparison were the Ford Ranger Raptor, GWM Cannon, Mitsubishi Triton GSR, Nissan Navara Pro-4X Warrior, Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series and the Volkswagen Amarok 10 Deserts Edition.

While many buyers won’t necessarily subject their 4x4s to the same hardships as Beer O’Clock Hill, the results offer some insight for those looking for a new off-road vehicle with decent off-road capabilities.
