The successor to the OnePlus 15 could be getting the much-anticipated camera hardware upgrade it deserves

About a month after the OnePlus 15’s arrival, the rumor mill is back in action and the OnePlus 16 is now on the radar. According to a Weibo post from popular Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS), the successor to the OnePlus 15 could come with a major upgrade that solves the only complaint buyers have about the current-gen flagship: the camera setup.

According to DCS, the OnePlus 16 could adopt the same camera configuration that Oppo is developing for the Find N6. A few days ago, it was reported that Oppo’s upcoming foldable book-style device, the Find N6, will feature a triple camera setup with a 200MP sensor (via the same source).

A possible camera reset for OnePlus’ next flagship

The Find N6 is said to have two 50MP sensors and one 200MP sensor (as part of its tripe camera setup). In the latest Chinese flagships such as the vivo X300 Pro and the Find X9 Pro, the telephoto sensor has the highest resolution. Therefore, the Find N6 could well have a 200 MP telephoto camera.

Now let’s get back to the latest claim: OnePlus 16 will adopt its camera setup from the rumored Find N6. If true, the OnePlus 15 successor could have a 200MP telephoto camera or two 50MP rear sensors (wide + ultrawide).

This could be a significant change for the OnePlus flagship, especially since it has been criticized for an on-paper downgrade of its camera system (similar resolution, smaller sensors than the OnePlus 13).

A 200-megapixel telephoto camera, along with Oppo’s imaging pipeline, could give the OnePlus 16 the camera upgrade the phone truly deserves. In theory, the handset should offer optical quality in sensor cutouts (at 2x, 4x and 10x zoom levels) while also offering up to 120x hybrid zoom (standard on recent Chinese flagships).

However, keep in mind that we are still early in the product cycle. The OnePlus 16 isn’t expected to launch for another 10 to 11 months, which is plenty of time to make significant changes to the lineup. Therefore, take the information with caution.

In the meantime, you can read about the newly launched OnePlus 15R, which offers better battery life than some of the most expensive flagships on the market.
