GWM will be one of only two car brands to offer petrol, diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of the same model when the company launches the first PHEV versions of its large off-road SUV from next month.
The GWY Tank 300 Hi4-T will arrive in Australian showrooms in March in flagship Ultra trim, with the entry-level Lux model following in early April.
The Lux costs $55,990 drive-away, while the Ultra costs $59,990 drive-away. GWM states that these are “time-limited special offer prices,” but does not confirm when they will end.
That means the Lux PHEV is $7,000 more expensive than its diesel counterpart, while the Ultra costs $9,000 more than its petrol equivalent, $7,000 more than the diesel and $3,000 more than the hybrid.

The gap gets even bigger as GWM is offering $1,000 discounts on the entire Tank 300 range through the end of February.
The Tank 300 is the latest GWM model to have a PHEV powertrain option in Australia, following the larger Tank 500, Haval H6 mid-size SUV and Cannon Alpha ute.
The Tank 300 Hi4-T combines a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 120 kW electric motor, providing a total system output of 300 kW and 750 Nm of torque, an electric range of up to 105 km on the NEDC cycle and a combined fuel consumption of 1.9 l/100 km.
GWM says a 30 to 80 percent charge will take 24 minutes using a 50kW DC fast charger, while Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability allows you to power external electrical devices with up to 6kW.
Braked towing capacity is in line with the rest of the range at 3,000kg and there’s a low-range transfer case and locking differentials front and rear.
According to GWM, a detailed feature list will be confirmed closer to release. Depending on the powertrain, there are various differences between the Lux and Ultra classes of the Tank 300 range.
However, all have a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
“With the Tank 300 Hi4-T PHEV, we continue to expand on our cutting-edge plug-in hybrid technology and deliver true off-road strength, all at a highly competitive price,” said John Kett, Chief Operating Officer of GWM Australia.
“As demonstrated with our other PHEV variants, we remain committed to delivering vehicles where customers can benefit from strong electric-only range, fast charging, V2L and true mechanical 4×4 capability.
“With the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) likely to transform the Australian automotive landscape like never before, GWM is ready to deliver more technology for less.”
The Tank 300 Hi4-T will hardly have any direct competition. The most obvious competitor is the B5 from BYD’s new premium brand Denza, which costs between $74,990 and $79,990 (excluding on-road costs) and is therefore significantly more expensive.
In the Australian new car market in 2026, only the Kia Sorento will also offer petrol, diesel, hybrid and PHEV powertrains. However, the Sorento’s base petrol engine has been canceled and stocks are expected to run out by the end of March.
