The Hill Heroes are creating a storm in Karnataka football

Kodagu: A football revolution is brewing in the misty hills of Kodagu, where cricket and hockey once reigned supreme. Kodagu Football Club, the plucky underdogs from this hinterland of Karnataka, have stormed to third place in the 2025-26 Super Division – proof that grit and heart can outpace big city budgets any day.

From heartbreak to absolute glory

Imagine this: A family grieving the loss of a loved one turns their grief into a sporting powerhouse. This is the story of Kodagu FC, founded by the Iychettira family as a tribute to a fallen football-loving brother – Iychettira Naren Subbaya. Mr. and Mrs. Ponnappa Iychettira, led by their eldest son Ponnappa, have made every effort to make this a reality. “We started this club in honor of my brother, but it has grown into something that is changing the lives of young people every day,” recalls Ponnappa. What started as a dream has turned into the only club from a rural ‘Mofussil’ belt to make it to the elite Karnataka Super Division.

They have built teams at all youth levels, the C Division and now the major leagues. Young people from sleepy villages receive structured training, professional coaching and a real chance to reach the top. The club has just received AIFF accreditation for its grassroots work, a badge of honor that screams it is doing it right. No more part-time jobs for Kodagu children – this is their ticket to the big break.

Ponnappa is not an armchair visionary. He’s the guy who’s been here since 2016, commuting teams at 3:30 a.m. – think 3:30 a.m. starts with coach Yenten Gyatso. They passed through villages like Begur, Guddehosur, Polibetta and Gonikoppa and conducted meetings continuously. Even today, weekend after weekend, he promotes U9, U11 and U13 players to the youth premier leagues in Bangalore and beyond. “Those early rides were tough, but seeing the kids shine on the field makes every mile worth it,” he says with a grin.

Grassroots grind in the monsoon mud

There was no football scene in Kodagu back then. Ponnappa and his family visited roadshows and street stalls, toddlers in tow, begging people to try the beautiful game. People stared, some giggled, but they kept at it. Now? It is a full-fledged movement whose programs attract children from the most remote corners.

They train at the Dravid Padukone Center in Bangalore for high performance sessions and provide world-class facilities to those interested in Kodagu. But the home turf is about to get an upgrade – a world-class center right in Kodagu to allow training all year round. No more sloshing through five to six months of monsoon mud that turns pitches into swamps. The players continue to fight and shock the Bangalore academies against all odds, but imagine what they would do with the proper all-weather pitch like the ones the city boys love. “The monsoon fields are a battlefield, but we are building this all-weather place so that no child misses out on their dreams,” vows Ponnappa.

It’s not just talk. Kodagu FC nurtures talent with minimal effort. Their youth teams are rocking urban leagues and toppling larger clubs. Seniors? They rose from seventh to fourth and now third in a 19-team league. Fans march all the way from the hills to cheer on the final – in a league full of urban outfits. This is passion that cannot be bought.

Punching above their weight

Here’s the kicker: Kodagu FC came third, sharing it with the leaders, while managing with less than a thirteenth of the operating costs of the other top eight teams. That’s efficiency, buddy – smart scouting, hard coaching and players running through walls. “We achieve more with less because our boys play with fire in their hearts and not just with fancy jerseys,” beams Ponnappa.

Players receive appropriate seasonal salaries, growth plans and exit routes. Numerous contracts have been transferred to state teams, I-League and even ISL contracts. At the national level, boys are lining up to get involved as they see Kodagu as a launching pad for professional careers. The technical team is sharp, the programs are tight and the atmosphere? Pure excellence.

Their senior national teams tell the story – photos from 2023, 2024 and 2025 show a team evolving, battle-tested and proud. Fans crowd the stands, waving flags and chanting. It’s electrifying and a real eye-catcher in a sport where money usually rules the roost.

The family hustle and bustle that changed everything

Go back to the early days: Ponnappa and family at busy functions, stands groaning under football equipment and shouting passers-by. “Come and try it!” they would scream. Curiosity turned to the crowd and the crowd to the teams. From fired dreamers to district darlings, it was nine years of non-stop bribery. “Back then, people laughed at us setting up stalls with the little ones, but the persistence got the attention,” laughs Ponnappa.

Ponnappa still drives the vans himself and balances the age groups like a pro. Every weekend, children take part in tournaments that promote skills and dreams. It’s this practical madness that creates winners – not fancy academies, but real toughness on the road.

The club is located at Coins Sports Centre, Guddehosur, Kodagu, Pin 571234. This is the foundation of the revolution. Grassroots snaps show children drilling with joy; Urban League images capture surprises; Challenging fields highlight the struggle. The senior team’s shots reflect progress.

Eyes on I-League, ISL Dreams

Kodagu FC doesn’t stop. The vision is clear: promotion to the I-League, then the ISL, packed with homegrown talent from Kodagu and Karnataka. Sponsors, well-wishers and locals gather. “I-League and ISL are next with our Kodagu boys taking the lead,” explains Ponnappa. Football is not a sideline here – it changes lives.

They are tackling the monsoon chaos head-on and pushing for the professional all-weather pitch. Give these kids consistent training and watch them rise. You are already a beacon that shatters stereotypes and opens doors.

In Kodagu, where hills hug the sky and coffee blooms, Kodagu FC proves that small places produce big talent. It’s endurance in shoes, passion on the pitch. For every wide-eyed kid dreaming of stardom, this club is proof: Lace up and anything is possible.
