The Google app leak gives us an insight into life with smart glasses and useful controls

Ahead of the release of Google’s Smart Glasses, a Reddit user appears to have gained access to the unreleased Glasses companion app via a preview build of Android Studio (which was also accessed by Android Authority). Although the app can’t be set up without the actual glasses, the interface strings and settings give us a good idea of what Google is building.

The package name of the APK in question is “com.google.android.glasses.companion”. This is an app that allows users to connect Google Glasses to their Android smartphone. The app opens to a splash screen that says “Welcome to a new way to see the world,” followed by “Set up your glasses now or discover your next pair of glasses in the Google Store.”

The next screen will ask the user to put on the glasses and hold them near the phone while pairing. After that, users would need to press the power button on the right arm of the glasses to make the LED on the device flash blue (indicating that it is in pairing mode), and then wear the glasses.

While these are the steps of the initial setup process, the release also reveals some key features of the Glasses companion app. For example, the app could include a setting to pause notifications when a conversation is detected. Additionally, the app could include an option to silence incoming notifications for a set duration.

Google is reportedly working on three types of smart glasses to launch in the next few years, but not all of them will have a display or Gemini-based features.

For such devices, the companion app includes an audio-only mode (which may also be available on models with a built-in display) and a message saying “Your glasses are not suitable for using Gemini.”

The app also notes that one of the three models may be able to record video in 3K resolution, as well as a security system that prevents users from blocking the recording display (similar to the Ray-Ban Meta glasses).

While the companion app doesn’t reveal any groundbreaking features, a new glasses design, or a release schedule, it does suggest that Google is serious about providing its users with an informed, practical, and distraction-free smart glasses experience.
