The current state of the breakfast room (and the plan)

When I wrote my Master List of Home Goals 2026 post last week, I didn’t include any current pictures of the breakfast room because Matt and I had been using that room as our temporary bedroom for over a year while I worked on our master bedroom suite all last year. Even when we moved into our new bedroom last week, the adjustable slatted frame was still in the breakfast room. With a lot of help from my mother, we stripped the bed and rebuilt it as a living room. This is how the room was used before we made it our temporary bedroom.

I’m so glad to have this room back in usable condition, but it’s nowhere near what it was before it was converted into our temporary bedroom. While I was finishing other areas, I searched our house for items that would work in those other areas and most of those items came from the breakfast room. Now this room looks a bit bare. This is what it looked like before…

And this is what the other side of the room looked like…

The artwork above the benches was the first thing I “shopped” for my closet, and these now hang above my washer and dryer.

And as you can see in the pictures above, the curtains from the breakfast/living room are now in my closet too.

I reupholstered and painted one of the benches for the foyer of our bedroom suite. (This is not where the bench ended up, but this picture shows the bench better than the most recent pictures.)

And I even picked up the plant and the orange and cream throws for our bedroom suite. After all this, this is what the breakfast room looks like now. The gallery wall with the TV is the only thing that hasn’t changed…

But the rest looks a bit sad and bare at the moment.

But this wall needs the most attention. My cable covers fell off the wall and now there are no benches or anything else to hide them.

And this wall desperately needs COLOR!

And I finally decided what I wanted to do. I would like to buy or build two matching sideboards for these walls. I highly doubt these are natural wood, but I couldn’t find what I wanted so I just used these for the model. I have a heart for green sideboards. Now that I’ve used green quite prominently in the bedroom, I’m on a green quest, so to speak. And on top of that, I want to use my spoon pinwheel art on one side and then on the other side I want to create another matching piece of art using the same item (wooden spoons) but in a different pattern. My spoon pinwheel artwork is probably my favorite piece of art I’ve ever done, and I don’t think its current placement in the living room is the best place for it. I think this will be much better.

And since I’m hoping to turn this room back into a breakfast room with a dining table and chairs by the end of this year, it just makes sense to put sideboards there instead of benches. These benches were never used the way I imagined.

And then of course I’m looking for the perfect fabric for these windows…

This time I’m going to do them right. In the last models there was only one fabric width for each curtain, and that is far too narrow for such a large window area. That’s why I’m going to double the material this time. And I think I also want to look for a patterned fabric – something bold, colorful and fun. I haven’t even started looking for fabrics yet, but I have an idea of what I’m looking for. Of course, if I start a search and already know what I’m looking for, it’s often much more difficult to find the right material. But I’m in no rush. I can take my time and do it right.
