A few years ago I had a vlog cast and we set ourselves the difficult task of narrowing down the best sports movies to just 10. As you can imagine, this was no easy task as this list could have included 50 films.
And as I think about our decisions now, with the Winter Olympics coming up, there’s one fantastic film missing from the list. Take a look at what was on the list and then let me know what you think is missing.
Since this was posted as a vlog entry (and no one has time for that), I’ve listed the selections at the video link, with a highlight from our discussion about why each selection was included in the master list. By the way, these are in no particular order. Narrowing it down to 10 was hard enough. The ranking of these 10 seems far too discouraging.
Rudy
“The slow clap at the end, the calling of his name, him getting the only play… no Goonies, no Hobbit moment, (Sean Astin) will always be Rudy to me.”
Remember the Titans
“I’ve seen it many times and it still gets me. It’s based on a true story, contains statements about the time and is more than just football.”
Pewter cup
“It was a fun movie, great cast and fun to watch.”
A league of its own
“Again a film that makes a statement about the times…It’s a great film and the acting is great.”
The Sandlot
“It’s the epitome of the best parts of being a summer child.”
Eight men out
“There is another historical factor in this film that seems to be of crucial importance to me.”
Prefontaine Without borders
“I just love that they took this kind of unknown person in history that only those who are passionate about running would know and turned it into a really great story.”

“I actually absolutely love this movie. HBO, it’s crazy that their stuff can be better than movies.”
The newbie
“I don’t know if it’s award-winning. It’s not critically acclaimed. It’s just good, clean family fun.”
Hoosiers
“It’s on a lot of people’s lists of the best sports movies of all time… Again, it’s a historical story that’s a sign of the times.”
So there you have it. A list that is glaringly missing from some great films.
