Tesla Australia sales decline in 2025, weighed down by Model 3

Teslas Australian sales fell sharply in 2025, despite the Model Y cemented its status as the brand’s best-selling vehicle.

According to the Electric Vehicle Council’s latest annual vehicle sales report – which tracks sales from automakers that don’t report on VFACTS – Tesla recorded 28,856 deliveries in Australia in 2025, down 24.8 percent from 38,347 in 2024.

The Model Y accounted for more than three-quarters of Tesla’s sales in Australia.

Tesla sales 2025 in Australia at a glance

  • Total Tesla: 28,856 (-24.8%)
  • Model Y: 22,239 (+4.6%)
  • Model 3: 6617 (-61.3%)

In 2025, the Model Y accounted for 77.1 percent of Tesla’s Australian sales (22,239 of 28,856). That’s a significant change from 2024, when the Model Y accounted for 55.4 percent of the total Tesla market. In other words: In 2025, Tesla sold around 3.4 Model Ys for every Model 3.

While Tesla’s overall results fell year-over-year, the breakdown by two models shows the brand moving in opposite directions.

The Tesla Model Y rose from 21,253 in 2024 to 22,239 in 2025 – an increase of 986 sales, or 4.6 percent. However, the Tesla Model 3 fell from 17,094 in 2024 to 6,617 in 2025 – a decline of 10,477 sales, or 61.3 percent.

The Model Y’s growth was not enough to offset the extent of the Model 3’s decline, leaving Tesla’s full-year earnings well behind 2024. The Australian figures reflect the brand’s global sales decline.

The electric vehicle maker has said it will announce sales of 1,640,752 vehicles in 2025, compared to 1,704,093 vehicles in 2024. This forecast means it will lose its status as the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer to China’s BYD.

The 3.7 percent annual sales decline marks the second straight year of declining sales for the U.S. electric vehicle giant after a tumultuous year that saw the unveiling of an updated Model Y that remains on track to become the world’s best-selling electric vehicle.
