The Game Awards 2025 provided a big surprise for Star Wars fans with the reveal of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. It’s a brand new single-player action RPG set in the fan-favorite Old Republic era. It will be released for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series
Running on Unreal Engine 5, the debut trailer looked incredible and confirmed the feature we all want: the ability to shape your story by choosing between the light and dark sides. But the real hype comes from the team building it.
The game is being developed by Arcanaut Studios under the direction of Casey Hudson. If you know anything about role-playing games, you know that Hudson directed the original Knights of the Old Republic (2003) and the Mass Effect trilogy. Essentially, the architect of the genre’s golden age returns to the universe he helped create.
Questions about the release schedule and what’s next
Of course, people immediately asked, “When can we play it?” Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier dampened the excitement, suggesting that a 2030 release date might actually be “optimistic” since the studio is still so new. This sparked major concerns that we wouldn’t see this game again in another generation of consoles.
Hudson quickly took to social media to provide clarity. He pushed back against the idea of waiting until 2030 and beyond, promising fans that while it’s still in its early stages, the game will definitely be released before the end of the decade.
This is important because Star Wars has long lacked a deep, choice-driven RPG. For players, Fate of the Old Republic feels like a spiritual homecoming. The most important thing right now is patience. It’s going to be a long wait, but with Hudson back at the helm, it looks like Lucasfilm Games is prioritizing quality and tradition over quick fundraising. Until then, we’ll just have to wait for updates – and maybe play through the originals again.
