Samsung’s next foldable device could give you a more tablet-like experience

Apple is expected to launch its first foldable iPhone sometime next year, and recent leaks suggest it may look very different from Samsung’s foldable flagship. Instead of a tall, square display like the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Apple is said to be using a shorter, wider design. Now a new report suggests that Samsung could follow suit and offer a device with a similar form factor next year.

According to ETNews, Samsung is preparing a “Wide Fold” to compete with the iPhone Fold. The device will reportedly feature a 7.6-inch foldable display, similar to the iPhone Fold’s rumored 7.69-inch interior screen. However, its cover screen is said to measure 5.4 inches, making it slightly larger than the iPhone Fold’s 4.75-inch outer screen.

Industry insiders familiar with Samsung’s plans say the Wide Fold’s inner display will have a 4:3 aspect ratio. According to rumors, the iPhone Fold will also use a similarly wide aspect ratio, which could make both devices feel more like compact tablets when unfolded.

Why a shorter, wider design might make more sense

A wider aspect ratio could solve one of the biggest problems with current foldable devices, which often feel awkward when multitasking and consuming media. By favoring width over height, both Apple and Samsung may be aiming to give users a more refined experience, similar to their tablet products.

The report adds that the Wide Fold will support 25W wireless charging, a feature expected to debut on the Galaxy S26 series early next year. It is also claimed that the device could launch next fall alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8. If true, this could position the Wide Fold as an alternative rather than a direct replacement for the Galaxy Z Fold range.

It currently remains unclear to what extent Samsung plans to release this new form factor. The company could initially limit availability to select markets to gauge interest, a strategy it recently used with the Galaxy Z TriFold.
