The Toyota bZ4X has seen its Subaru Solterra twin receive massive price cuts to accompany a major update to the midsize electric SUV.
The entry-level, single-motor, front-wheel-drive version of Toyota Australia’s first electric vehicle (EV) now costs $55,990 before on-road costs, a reduction of $10,010, while the two-motor, four-wheel-drive flagship now costs $67,990 plus on-road costs – down from $6,910. The updated range is now on sale.
Toyota’s move follows Subaru’s $6,000 to $7,000 price cuts for the updated Solterra.
The huge price cuts come despite the updated bZ4X, which offers more power, longer range and additional standard equipment, among other improvements.
Both the FWD and AWD variants get a new 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery and more powerful electric motors.

Here’s how the updated bZ4X performs:

|---|---|---|
| Performance | 165 kW (+15 kW) | 252 kW (+92 kW) |
| Torque | 268.6nm (+6nm) | 438 Nm (+101 Nm) |
| Range (WLTP) | 591 km (+155 km) | 517 km (+106 km) |
| AC charging tariff | 22 kW (previously 11 kW) | 22 kW (previously 11 kW) |
| DC charging rate | 150kW | 150kW |
The braked towing capacity of the AWD variant has also been doubled to 1500 kg.
The bZ4X features a revised exterior design that includes a version of Toyota’s latest “Hammerhead” family face.
The base bZ4X 2WD features redesigned 18-inch alloy wheels, as well as roof rails, puddle lights, headlight washers and gloss black wheel arches.
Inside, there’s a 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen (up from 12.3 inches), while other new features include paddle shifters, dual mobile phone chargers, a heated steering wheel, a hands-free electric tailgate and a 1500W inverter in the luggage compartment to power small devices.
Other safety features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist and a surround-view camera, all of which were previously exclusive to the bZ4X AWD. A driver monitoring camera has also been added.
The bZ4X AWD gets redesigned 20-inch alloy wheels.
The Premium paint is available across the range for $595, and the AWD is also available with a two-tone exterior paint finish for $1,350.
Not only has Toyota reduced prices and – in the case of the FWD – added kit, but it is also offering private buyers the choice of a free 7kW Jet Charge home charger or a one-year/625kWh Chargefox voucher until the end of 2026 through the Toyota Go loyalty program.
Toyota is also offering a “limited time deposit” of $5,000 on the bZ4X 2WD and $7,500 on the AWD for private customers who choose to finance their bZ4X through Toyota Finance Australia.
The Japanese brand announced in July 2024 that it had no plans to lower prices for bZ4X despite slow sales.
After announcing in August 2023 that it would deliver several thousand bZ4Xs last year, Toyota Australia had lowered its official target to just 1,500 annual sales by 2024.
“It’s a difficult proposition for people who have bought a car and then you turn it around not once, not twice, but three times – I think that’s not a good practice and not a practice that Toyota will abandon,” Toyota Australia vice president of sales, marketing and franchise Sean Hanley said in September 2024.
“This undermines trust and we are proud of the trust we have built.
“Cutting prices or giving massive incentives is the laziest option to begin with. Build trust and knowledge, it works 100 percent… there is no easy way. There are quick ways that will give you short-term success, but that’s all, short-term success.”
Toyota Australia only delivered 977 bZ4Xs in 2024.
The bZ4X will be joined in local showrooms in the second quarter of 2026 by the bZ4X Touring, which features a more traditional estate body. Subaru’s version, the Trailseeker, has yet to be confirmed for our market.
