A look at how Porsche is celebrating FA Porsche’s 90th anniversary with cars, watches and accessories rooted in history.
December 11th would have been Ferdinand Alexander Porsche’s 90th birthday, and for anyone who shares a passion for cars and design, he continues to have an incredible influence on the automotive world. FA Porsche is not only the man behind the legendary shape of the 911, but also a designer in the truest sense of the word, someone who can reduce a car, a watch or an everyday object to its essentials and nothing more. Together with his brother Hans-Peter, he founded Porsche Design in 1972 and the studio quickly became known for its functional, timeless work. To mark the anniversary, Porsche and Porsche Design have jointly developed a limited collection that pays homage to his vision.
At the heart of the collection is the Chronograph 1 – 90 FA Porsche, a watch that is essentially a modern interpretation of the original Chronograph I from 1972. The design is clear and straightforward, with black-coated titanium, subtly patinated Super-LumiNova on the hands and indices and the initials of FA Porsche above the day of the week at three o’clock. The rotor even mirrors the shape and color of the wheels of the 911 GT3 90 FA Porsche, the limited edition model tied to this release. And like every Porsche Design watch, it is made in Switzerland with COSC-certified precision.
The rest of the anniversary collection carries the same calm cohesion. The 911 GT3 90 FA Porsche is limited to 90 examples and is based on personal taste, from the color FA Green Metallic to the grid pattern on the seats, which is reminiscent of his favorite jackets. There’s also a matching weekender bag and a reissued Porsche Junior sleigh, both made from the same materials and patterns as the car. Whether you’re looking at a car, a watch, or even a sleigh, it’s clear that his designs were about lasting value.
