Pirelli produces 50% bio-based tires for the McLaren W1

Pirelli equips the McLaren W1 with the latest tire technology.

Pirelli is responsible for many of the world’s leading performance tires, and the McLaren W1 is the latest in a series of hypercars that have used Pirelli tire technology to achieve their incredible levels of performance. With a hybrid powertrain that produces an incredible 1,258 horsepower and a design that combines lightweight construction, track-focused aerodynamics and beautiful looks, the McLaren W1 is not only among the highest performance cars in the current automotive world, but is also part of a cohort that ushers in a new era of hypercar excellence.

Combining immense power with speed-focused engineering, the McLaren W1 combines brutal performance with sustainability with its advanced hybrid powertrain, and thanks to Pirelli, so do its tires. Three bespoke tire components have been manufactured by Pirelli exclusively for the McLaren P1 hypercar: a P Zero R, a P Zero Trofeo RS and a P Zero Winter 2. The tires are all made from over 50 percent bio-based materials, which is part of Pirelli’s plan to launch tires that are 80 percent bio-based by 2030.

The P Zero R is intended for everyday riding, while the P Zero Trofeo RS is intended for the track and the P Zero Winter 2 is intended for riding in the colder months. The development of the new groundbreaking sustainable, performance-focused tires required meticulous efforts, starting with cutting-edge simulation technology that enabled virtual testing, and physical testing that took place at tracks such as Nardò, Idadia in Spain and Pirelli’s Sottozero Center in Sweden to ensure the tires’ performance in a variety of driving, weather and surface conditions. With bio-based materials and Pirelli’s valued tire expertise, the McLaren W1 opens up a new level of sustainability and performance.
