I can’t believe our master bedroom suite is finally finished. This whole project took over a year to complete and now that it’s finished I want to spend all my time here and enjoy the fruits of my labor. I was hoping to get a video tour of the entire bedroom suite yesterday, but I ran out of time. For those of you who like videos, here it comes. But for now, I wanted to share a photo tour of the entire area in one post. I have separate posts with more details on each individual area (the foyer, the walk-in closet with laundry room, the bedroom, and the bathroom). But today I really wanted to focus on how the whole area flows together.
We start at the entrance. This used to be a paneled opening leading into a hallway, and in this hallway there were four doors – three doors to three bedrooms and one door to a guest bathroom. Now the paneled opening has French doors and the entire area is our master bedroom. I love that when I stand in the music room, I can not only see the foyer, but also get a peek into the colorful closet and our new inviting bedroom.
The direct view shows our chapel picture from our wedding day. In a sense, the foyer functions as an extension of the walk-in closet. Since I didn’t have room in the walk-in closet to sit and put on shoes or for a full-length mirror, I placed these items in the foyer of our bedroom.
And on the wall to the right is the guest bathroom, which will soon become a storage area where we can store Matt’s equipment when not in use (shower wheelchair, Hoyer lift, and power wheelchair), as well as a new water heater, sink, and storage space for other household items. The closet is the only area of our bedroom suite that still needs finishing, but I can’t work on it until we have a functioning guest bathroom to take its place.
The view from our bedroom is one of my favorite views in our home – my colorful pixel art and the pink sofa in the music room.
From the foyer of the bedroom suite you can also take a look into our kitchen. I should have turned on the lights so it could be seen better, but that’s the kitchen through the paneled opening between the bookshelf and the pink sofa. This photo was taken with a wide angle lens, making the foyer appear larger than it actually is.
Here’s the view from the foyer (I’m standing in front of the closet doors) of the walk-in closet and a look into the bedroom.
And if you look back the other way, you can see into the closet and music room from the foyer. Several people urged me to add a door to the closet, but honestly, I love seeing my colorful clothes. I dress the same way I decorate. Lots of COLOR!
Here is the view directly from the foyer into the closet. The curtains in the closet are almost the same color as the sofa in the music room. I love this continuity.
From the closet I catch a glimpse of the foyer. As I was taking these pictures I realized I had missed two or three small finishing projects, so I need to go back and finish those. One of those unfinished projects is touching up the paint around the door on the closet side. I did a very messy job painting the new dark green trim that covers the edge of the grasscloth wallpaper and then I forgot to go back and touch up the light blue paint to clean up those messy edges. Pooh. There’s always something I forget! Please imagine that the paint around the door on the side of the cabinet looks sharp and flawless. This is actually what it will look like soon.
And now we’re back out in the foyer, looking toward the closet and bedroom.
I just love this view. I can’t imagine the closet having a door. I love being able to see the cabinet color, the wallpaper, and all my colorful stuff.
I know you’ve seen this view from the bedroom to the music room. I love seeing how open this area is now. It used to feel like a closed hallway with a door separating the room from the foyer. And now it feels so open and much bigger than before.
Standing next to the bed you can overlook the entire bathroom, bedroom and music room.
Here’s a direct look from the bedroom into the bathroom. When I took these pictures, the sun was setting behind our house, so all the light made the bathroom walls appear brighter than they actually are. The color of the walls actually closely resembles the light blue-green color of the duvet cover. I would like to put a film on the outside door glass to provide privacy and diffuse the bright light coming through the back door in the afternoon and early evening.
I love this view from the bedroom into our bathroom, but you can see another little project I missed. I forgot to refinish (or replace) the wood transition strip between the hardwood floor and the tile, so it’s still black with the black carpet squares from when this was our home gym. I’ll take care of it soon so that it matches the parquet floor.
The color of the bathroom walls in this picture is much more consistent with the actual color. The sun had pretty much set, so the walls don’t glow as much anymore.
I took several photos of this view because I love it. It’s great to finally have a nice and functional bedroom right next to our bathroom after all these years.
I took this photo with a wide angle lens, so it is a bit distorted and disproportionate. But I wanted to capture as much as possible in one photo.
This one has no wide angle lens and no distortion.
And when I stand in the doorway between the bedroom and the bathroom, you can see the water closet on the right of the wall.
Here’s another wide angle view (with distortion), but I wanted to show you the two areas where the hallway doors used to be. So in the bathroom (before it was a bathroom) there was a door to the hallway (i.e. the foyer) about three feet from the back wall of the toilet. And then in the bedroom there was a door from the bedroom to the hallway in the narrow area between the bedroom and the foyer. And of course there was no door between the bedroom and the bathroom as they were two separate bedrooms.
While I was taking these pictures I lost daylight pretty quickly, so I should have turned on the floor lamp next to the chair. But here’s a view from the bathroom of the bedroom’s TV/reading area.
And another view from the bathroom in the other direction…
And here’s one last picture from the bathroom, showing the door to the bedroom. So for now we have an outside door in the bedroom and an outside door in the bathroom. But if we ever manage to build the addition to the back of our house, the exterior door in the bathroom will become an interior door, leaving us with only one exterior door in our master bedroom.
And that’s it for now! I can’t believe it’s actually finished. The whole thing took years to develop, if we count from the moment I started working on the bathroom. But the other areas (foyer, closet and bedroom) have been in the works for over a year. It’s hard to believe they’re finished. And now I can move on to the new guest bathroom (i.e. the studio bathroom). Once that’s done, I’ll come back and finish the storage closet, which is the final piece of our master bedroom suite.
