NATO believes that standard iPhones and iPads are secure enough for sensitive data

Apple just received a major security certification from NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), clearing both the iPhone and iPad for use with classified information up to the “NATO Restricted” level, without the need for special software, custom configurations or security additions.

What NATO approval means

In its latest Newsroom post, the brand announced that iPhone and iPad will be included in an exclusive list of devices deemed secure enough to process sensitive data used in Alliance operations and communications. While “restricted” is technically only the entry-level level of classified data in NATO’s classification framework, it still covers information whose disclosure would be detrimental to the alliance’s interests.

Unlike many traditional military or enterprise security tools, NATO believes these devices do not require additional security software, hardware modules or locking configurations to meet their exclusion standards. This basically implies that the security stack that Apple builds into its hardware, software, and Apple chips is powerful enough for this level of classification.

What is “NATO Restricted”?

The term may sound like ultra-high security, but “NATO restricted” is technically the lowest classification level the alliance uses. It generally applies to information whose premature disclosure could harm company interests. Regardless, this is the first time a consumer mobile has been recognized at this level without custom hardware or software.

Why this matters to Apple usersS

This isn’t just a marketing badge for Apple. It is a statement about modern mobile security. Devices previously approved for transmitting sensitive information were part of specialized government-only systems with custom software and hardware measures. So Apple’s announcement suggests that commercial consumers have reached a point where there are built-in protections.

For companies and organizations that value high security, such as governments, global corporations and defense contractors, this certification could increase confidence in the use of iPhones and iPads. Apple executives noted that the company’s “security by design” philosophy integrates protection at every level, with features such as biometric facial identity (Face ID), strong encryption and advanced integrity checks built into Apple chips and iOS.

It’s important to remember that NATO’s endorsement doesn’t mean these Apple devices are suddenly suitable for any classified task. By definition it just means it is safe enough. Whether this is evidence of how far consumer safety has advanced or how lower-end classification standards have shifted depends on how one reads the decision.
