Lenovo’s Legion Go Fold Concept could blur the line between handheld and PC

Lenovo is reportedly working on a bold new iteration of its Legion Go series of handheld consoles that transforms into a foldable-screen Windows tablet. Portable gaming PCs have been all the rage lately, and the Chinese brand may be looking to add variety with an innovative new concept that not only fits in your hands, but also folds into a larger screen to serve as a PC-style device.

A combination of portable handhelds and large foldable displays

According to leaked materials shared with WindowsLatest, Lenovo’s Legion Go Fold Concept will arrive as an 11.6-inch handheld with a foldable display that will be unveiled at the major technology event in Barcelona. The highlight here is the flexible pOLED panel, which can be expanded from the compact 7.7-inch mode to a larger 11.6-inch screen. Essentially, the design seems to be inspired by modern foldable smartphones. Due to its new form factor, Lenovo’s concept could offer different modes:

  • Standard handheld mode: When folded, it resembles a traditional portable gaming device with detachable controllers on both sides.
  • Vertical split screen mode: The screen can be split when opened upright, allowing one half to play games and the other to perform other tasks such as streaming or multitasking.
  • Horizon full screen mode: With the display unfolded horizontally and controllers connected, you get a large-screen handheld experience that rivals tablets.
  • Extended Desktop Mode: Pair the Legion Go Fold with a wireless keyboard to make it work as a laptop.

What awaits you under the hood

The Legion Go Fold Concept wouldn’t just be a mere presentation platform, as the leak hints at hardware capable of on-the-go performance. The handheld is powered by Intel’s Core Ultra 7 258V processor (likely paired with integrated Xe2 graphics), 32GB of RAM and a 48Wh cell. As with many Windows handhelds, battery life will be a challenge. The larger screen would put even more strain on the battery, but would also provide an even more immersive gaming experience beyond what a typical handheld can offer.

I see the vision here

The idea of a handheld that transforms into a desktop PC with a larger screen real estate is certainly compelling. You don’t have to resort to an external display, monitor or TV port to enjoy your games because Lenovo offers versatility in the way you play your games. Unfortunately, it’s still ultimately just a concept, and we may not see a commercial release for such a hybrid handheld PC for another year or two.
