Jaipur: Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology’s Samardeep Singh Gill improved his own All India University (AIU) mark in the men’s shot put while Isha Chander Prakash (women’s heptathlon) and her men’s 4x100m team surpassed the betting records on the final day of athletics action at the Khelo India University Games Rajasthan 2025 at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium here on Thursday.
The fifth edition of KIUG 2025 will be held in seven cities in Rajasthan. A total of 4,448 athletes from 222 universities compete against each other in 23 medal disciplines. The games will be held under the aegis of the Sports Authority of India in association with the Rajasthan State Sports Council and will be hosted by Poornima University.
With just one day of competition left, Chandigarh University extended its lead at the top of the medal table to 41 by bagging seven gold medals in canoeing and kayaking on Thursday.
While Chandigarh University dominated the canoeing and kayaking events, three new records were set in athletics, taking the four-day total to 12.
Shot putter Samardeep, who has beaten two-time Asian Games champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor three times this year, hurled the shot put to a distance of 19.42m in his second attempt to win the gold medal, while runner-up Aniket of Guru Kashi University managed only 18.08m.
Samardeep, the previous AIU record (18.76m) and KIUG record (18.75m), has been in exceptional form this year, consistently throwing over 19 meters and repeating the feat in Jaipur.
“I came here to perform for my university while I am pursuing my Masters in Physical Education there. I also had an ankle injury before coming here but I am happy to be able to maintain my consistency here,” the 24-year-old, who set his personal best of 19.82m at the National Interstate Championships in Chennai earlier this year, told SAI Media.
Samardeep’s teammate Isha Chander Prakash surpassed the KIUG record in the heptathlon with a score of 4857. Isha had gained a sizable lead over her opponents after the first four events on Wednesday and maintained that lead on Thursday to improve the previous record by 109 points. The previous record was held by Sonu Kumari of Lovely Professional University.
Olympian and national 100m-200m record holder Animesh Kujur then ended the competition on a high note for KIIT as he led his team to a new 4x100m meet record with a time of 40.09 seconds. The silver medalists from Mahatma Gandhi University also equaled Mangalore University’s previous KIUG record of 40.76 seconds.
In Udaipur, Chandigarh University bagged seven gold medals on the final day of canoeing and kayaking action at Fateh Sagar Lake, ending the discipline with 23 gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal. Guru Kashi University was the second best contingent with three gold medals, one silver medal and three bronze medals.
In the men’s football final at Poornima University, the University of Calicut defeated Guru Nanak Dev University 5-4 on penalties after failing to score in regular time.
