The red, two-door BMW was the beginning of a friendship and a musical legacy.
When you think of DJ Khaled, the first things that probably come to mind are mansions, private jets, and a garage full of luxury cars. But ask him, and he’d probably tell a different story – one built on humble beginnings, a relentless work ethic, and a constant drive to pursue and be great. And as he recently celebrated his 50th birthday in Miami surrounded by friends and family, it’s incredible to take a walk down memory lane with DJ Khaled and remember some of the key moments that led to him leaving his mark on music forever. That nostalgia came to life in the form of an all-wheel-drive icon this year when DJ Khaled took to Instagram to show his fans and followers the moment his longtime friend Lenny S. gifted him an E30 BMW E30 on behalf of himself and Jay-Z.
At first glance, you’re probably wondering where a late ’80s M car will fit in a collection of Rolls-Royces and Maybachs, but what you don’t understand is that the E30 M3 represents a defining moment for Khaled. Along with a small model of the car, framed photos of young Khaled show that the world-famous music producer and entrepreneur owned this very M3 when he was just 15 or 16 years old and reached the top of the music charts. The two smile and continue to reminisce about the M3, now a collector’s item, and how it eventually caught fire after Khlaed installed an audio system in it. The real surprise came when Lenny S. escorted Khaled outside to his driveway, where a pristine red 1991 BMW E30 M3 sat parked like a blast from the past.
As if things could get any better, the M3 was equipped with a vanity plate reading “WTB-M3,” the original plate that Khaled placed on his car. It wasn’t long before he was sitting in the front seat talking about the days he spent rushing around, selling mixtapes and pulling alligator-skin shoes out of the trunk. Surrounded by a car collection worth up to eight figures, the excitement that the 34-year-old BMW inspired just goes to show that nostalgia drives our passion for all things automotive, not just price tags.
