While the rest of the automotive industry is phasing out eight-cylinder engines, China is exiting the automotive industry companion did the opposite.
The company is now considering using its unusual eight-cylinder boxer engine in its vehicles.
GWM originally introduced a 2.0-liter flat-eight engine at the 2024 Beijing Motor Show and followed up the following year with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8.

But while the V8 was developed for use in the range of off-road vehicles – possibly the Tank 300, 500 and 700 – the flat-eight boxer engine was originally developed for the company’s Souo S2000 touring motorcycle.
“We may install this (eight-cylinder) engine in other vehicles in the future,” a GWM spokesperson told the US publication Car and driver.
“This applies not only to motorcycles, but also to cars.”
The 2.0-litre eight-cylinder engine produces around 115kW of power and 190Nm of torque. However, it is not clear whether its displacement will be increased for use in cars. At this point, GWM has not given any indication as to which model or models the Flat-Eight will be installed in.
Technically speaking, unlike Subaru’s “boxer” engines – where the cylinders look like a boxer punching gloves together – the GWM engine is more similar to Porsche’s flat-six engines, where one cylinder moves inwards while the other moves outwards.
This makes it more like a V8 engine, except that the cylinders are arranged in a 180-degree configuration rather than the traditional 90-degree V shape.
