Okay, I admit, I had never heard the term “cereal girl” until I joined TikTok last year.
But it turns out I was a cereal girl for years without even knowing it!
In college I was president of the environmental club (cheesy name “ORr Earth” because the school was OU) and I spent hours lobbying the school to install more recycling bins.
I wore Chacos and Birkenstocks, led camping and hiking trips, listened to Fleetwood Mac before TikTok made it back to the top of the charts, and was never far from my reusable water bottle covered in colorful stickers.
Today, I live in Colorado and hike like it’s my job (because as an outdoor content creator, it kind of is!). I love thrifting, plants, and yoga, and spend several months of the year living in my Subaru while visiting national parks with my dog.
I don’t eat cereal, but I’m a 100% cereal girl.
Girls have started messaging me and asking where I buy my clothes because the “granola girl aesthetic” is in style right now. I’ve never considered myself fashionable, but here are a few pieces that I would consider a “granola girl starter pack.”
In the winter, this Carharrt hat basically sticks to my head.
Pro Tip: If you have a small head like me, go for the child size! It’s half the price of the adult version and still fits me well, a 5’7″ adult woman.
Patagonia is a popular and eco-conscious brand with cozy fleeces that last through many seasons of camping trips. (Need a new book? Patagonia founder’s Let My People Go Surfing is a fabulous read.)
Check out Patagonia’s WornWear collection for quality pre-owned options, including some great vintage styles.
3. A great overall
Dovetail Workwear is my favorite pair of functional yet fashionable overalls, perfect for road trips or just lounging at home.
Carharrt also has a nice (and cheaper) pair.
Huts make you look like you’re outside chopping wood or curled up around a campfire with the wood you just chopped burning. Goes great with a cropped tank top underneath and a statement hat.
Blundstones, affectionately known as Blundies, is a durable, waterproof Australian brand that has been popular with nature lovers for decades. They look great with overalls, jeans or hiking leggings.
The more bracelets, the better! Pura Vida’s wax coated rope bracelets are very popular, but even better when they are friendship bracelets that you made yourself at camp.
7. And while you’re at it, some rings
Granola girls are also known for their impressive ring collections, especially chunky silver rings. I love this cactus!
Pair these with linen pants or overalls for a cute, casual look. For maximum Cereal, wear your stockings with socks!
Like the oversized shirt jacket, you can pair your corduroy shirt with jeans and boots and be campfire ready in an instant.
Want to look like you can go rafting on the Colorado River anytime? Grab a pair of Chacos. A Chaco tan is a sure sign of a great summer.
11. Anything thrifty
Being a cereal girl is all about being eco-friendly, so saving is your best bet on all of these items!
Places to Shop: eBay, ThredUp, Poshmark, and your local thrift store.
Things to look for: Vintage band t-shirts, oversized flannel shirts and jackets, vintage sweaters with unique patterns, vintage Levis, reusable water bottles and glassware… You can find almost anything used, which is better for your wallet AND for the planet.
Nothing says cereal girl like a headband, ideally with pigtails underneath. I love the yellow above! You can also find great handmade bandanas and headbands on Etsy.
HydroFlask is great for everyday use to keep water extremely cold, while the lighter reusable Nalgene is better for camping and hiking.
(Pro tip: On cold nights in the tent, you can use your Nalgene as a hot water bottle! Just fill it with near-boiling water before bed and throw it in your sleeping bag.)
Most Cereal Girl water bottles come with stickers, such as one for each of your favorite national parks. I love searching Etsy for unique stickers to swap with friends.
I know, I know, I listed the overalls twice! But linen overalls are the softer, cozier and more relaxed version of the work overalls mentioned above.
A loose-fitting, popular pair of jeans is another granola girl staple. Levi’s are a tried and tested option.
For the grunge granola girl, there are vintage band t-shirts (or at least t-shirts that look like them). could being vintage) are great.
What cereal girl must-haves did I miss? Let me know!
