Google Messages could soon make it much easier to tell someone exactly where you are. A new feature spotted in development would allow users to share their live location directly in a chat and update it in real-time as they move.
The feature was discovered by Android Authority during a Google Messages APK teardown. It shows that Google is working on integrated real-time location sharing, similar to what many users already rely on in apps like WhatsApp or Telegram.
Unlike sharing a static location PIN, this option updates continuously and shows your movement for a selected period of time.
How live location sharing would work in Messages
The new Real-time Location option appears in the attachment of a conversation. Tapping on it will start the location sharing process. If location access has not yet been granted, the app will first ask for permission.
Users can then choose how long their live location remains active. Options include an hour, today only, or a custom duration. While sharing is active, Google Messages displays a persistent banner at the top of the conversation.
A notable detail is how recipients receive the location. Even if the other person doesn’t have the feature enabled, they will still receive a live location link. If the Google Find Hub app is installed, the link will open there. Otherwise, it will open in a web browser with real-time updates.
Location sharing can be stopped at any time by tapping the banner at the top of the chat and selecting “Stop.” There’s no word yet on when the feature will roll out publicly.
But Google appears to be intent on turning Messages into a more comprehensive communications app. Recent updates have added smarter tools, from SMS fraud alerts to features that ensure your messages don’t get lost or ignored in busy group chats.
