Google is discontinuing the weather app for Android

Google is quietly saying goodbye to one of the most famous mini apps for Android. As reported by , the company is discontinuing the long-standing Google Weather experience and replacing it with a redesigned weather interface within Google Search 9to5Google.

If you’ve ever tapped the Sun and Clouds shortcut on your home screen to quickly check the weather forecast, you’ve already used what many consider to be Android’s default weather app. Although it felt like a standalone app, it was actually a full-screen weather experience integrated into the Google app. However, that link is now redirecting to a new search-based weather page, and the change appears to be widespread after months of testing.

The original interface was simple and recognizable. A clean, full-screen feed opened with Google’s iconic “Froggy” background, showing current conditions, a 10-day forecast, and quick switching between saved cities. For many Android users, it’s the fastest way to check the weather without having to install a third-party app.

The replacement retains most of the same information, but the experience changes. Instead of a standalone full-screen app, tapping the shortcut now opens a Google search results page, which includes the weather map among other search items. The redesigned site continues to display forecasts, air quality data and detailed weather metrics. In addition to the usual hourly and 10-day forecasts, an AI-generated summary is also introduced. However, the experience now behaves like a typical web results page, complete with additional links and search content as you scroll.

Interestingly, Pixel phone owners are largely unaffected. These devices already ship with a dedicated Pixel Weather app, meaning the change will mostly impact non-Pixel Android users who have relied on the shortcut as their main built-in weather tool. However, if you’re not a Pixel user and prefer fast, dedicated weather tools, this switch might lead you to turn to third-party apps. Still, it’s another sign that Google’s future on Android is increasingly focused on search as a hub for everyday information.
