Google gives tips on using two different TLDs for SEO 2025

In a recent Reddit discussion, Google’s John Mueller shared valuable information SEO consulting for companies. She wants companies to use two different TLDs for SEO. These different top-level domains (TLDs) for your business will improve your online presence. Specifically, a company plans to use the .co.uk TLD for its general website and .digital for marketing campaigns. Mueller’s guidance provides insight into how companies can manage multiple businesses TLDs for SEO without affecting your search rankings.

Best practices for using two TLDs for SEO

Mueller outlined a series of steps for companies that want to use two of them TLDs:

  • Perform a site migration: Start with a normal site migration. This includes setting up 301 redirects for all pages from the .digital domain to the .co.uk domain. This ensures that search engines understand the relationship between the two websites.
  • Focus on one domain for SEO: When building your online presence, it is important to prioritize a domain, such as the TLD “.co.uk”. The search engines should clearly identify which domain is the primary.
  • Avoid duplicate content issues: During the transition period, avoid using the rel=canonical tag, which tells search engines which version of a page is the preferred one. Mueller recommends against using this method during migration because it could confuse search engines in determining which domain to recognize.
  • Email address on a different TLD: If your company’s email address uses the .digital domain, it’s not a problem for SEO. Google does not use email domain information for search rankings.
