Gemini’s new ChatGPT import lets you maintain context when you switch

A beta feature in Gemini lets you move your ChatGPT chat history so you can continue to work with the same context instead of starting from scratch. For anyone who spends months dealing with prompts, corrections, and decisions in old threads, the Gemini ChatGPT import is designed to make the transition feel less like a reset.

Google describes the option as “import AI chats.” The process is simple in theory: you export your conversations from another AI platform, upload that file, and then resume those chats in Gemini with the old context attached.

There is a built-in trade-off. Imported chats and everything you say afterward are saved to your Gemini activity and this content can be used to improve Google models. The material also does not yet confirm any important fundamentals, such as which file formats are supported or how widely the beta version will be rolled out.

A file upload, not a wizard

The most telling detail is where the tool appears. Google’s test adds the importer into Gemini’s attachment menu, suggesting a simple upload instead of a separate migration dashboard.

It also signals who the feature is intended for. This is aimed at people who are actively switching from another assistant and trying not to lose track of the context that speeds up daily usage, especially when relying on previous threads for ongoing projects.

Your story becomes new data

Convenience comes with real data impact. Once you upload an archive, these older messages are saved to your Gemini Activity and Google indicates that the content can be used to improve its models.

Before you transfer anything, skim the export and trim it. Remove sensitive inserts, personal identifiers, and anything you only shared because it was stuck in a private chat on another platform. Keep what you actually need for reference later.

What you should check before switching

Timing is still the missing piece. The material indicates testing but does not specify a release date, regions, or whether it will launch on mobile or web first.

If you want to be ready, export your chat history now, trim it, then check the Gemini activity controls in your account before uploading it. If the option appears in your attachment menu, you can apply the context you want without importing more than intended.
