5. Suzuki Fronx
Our fifth most popular review of the year was published in July. Written by news editor William Stopford, it was our review of the Suzuki Fronx.
William Stopford wrote:
“Suzuki is betting that buyers in one of the most price-conscious segments of the Australian new car market will spend more on a vehicle that is smaller and less powerful than many small Chinese and Indian SUVs.
“It’s a tough battle for a vehicle that fights uphill.
“To be completely honest, the Fronx lacks the speed of many of its rivals due to a slow powertrain, while its price is relatively high – although it does have a good level of standard safety technology.
“But it also has many features that will appeal to buyers. It has Suzuki’s reputation for reliability, a robust and straightforward ride, lots of logically arranged physical controls and a range of safety technologies that won’t drive you crazy with loud cries.
“For those who want more features than a base Venue or Stonic and don’t yet trust a Chinese or Indian budget brand, the Fronx makes a good case for itself. We just wish it had more of Suzuki’s guts and a lower price.”

4. Toyota Yaris Cross GXL Hybrid
In February there was a review of the Toyota Yaris Cross GXL Hybrid written by senior staff member Matt Campbell.
Matt Campbell wrote:
“It could be worse than getting into a Toyota Yaris Cross. This is an efficient and interesting small SUV with a clever interior and improved cabin design.
“But a noisy driving experience is something you have to put up with, and compared to newer rivals it lacks a bit of refinement.
“Still, I’d recommend you give it a try if you’re looking for a city-friendly hybrid SUV.”

3. Haval Jesus Lux Cwm
Our review of the GWM Haval Jolion Lux went live in January, written by deputy marketplace editor Josh Nevett, and also made the top five in 2025.
Josh Nevett wrote:
“The GWM Haval Jolion no longer makes as much sense as it once did, especially as a lux petrol engine.
“It’s still cheap – very cheap, at least until the end of January – but there’s nothing else about this SUV that screams “pick me.” GWM hasn’t really updated the design of this mid-range variant and the same goes for the interior as well.
“With the base petrol engine, the Lux can roughly keep up with the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, MG ZS, Mazda CX-3, Chery Omoda 5 and Mitsubishi ASX in terms of performance, but is far behind in terms of efficiency.
“And after the changes to GWM’s premium price service, the Jolion is no longer particularly cheap to maintain. I wasn’t a fan of the inadequate safety systems either.
“Although the Jolion is a spacious and affordable entry-level SUV, it lacks the driving dynamics or interior wow factor to be the first choice in a crowded segment. This is particularly true when GWM returns to pre-discount pricing starting in February.”
“Instead, it’s worth upgrading to the Tiggo 4 Pro for a more refined experience at the same price, or upping the budget for something with a Korean or Japanese logo.”

2. HR-VE:HEV
Our test report on the Honda ZR-V e:HEV X was also very popular. It was written by your real market journalist Max Davies.
Max Davies wrote:
“The HR-V is a good thing, and this e:HEV-X variant is probably the first choice.
“It’s economical and quiet while being easy to drive, which sets it apart from many other new cars currently on sale. Even better, Honda quality shines through in every aspect of the car, meaning it’s likely to keep up as the mileage increases.”
“The seamless and economical hybrid powertrain has enough power for what it needs to do, and we always appreciate well-tuned safety equipment. The infotainment equipment is also first class, if not a little nit-picked for some people, but I’m in the function over form camp and it’s hard to argue with a system that doesn’t have flaws.”
“We can also appreciate the HR-V’s instrument cluster for its simplicity, although it still seems a bit odd that the base ZR-V has a fully digital instrument cluster at a nearly identical price.
“If you can overcome the lack of five seats, a somewhat small trunk and no spare wheel, you would do well to get behind the wheel of the e:HEV X.”
“The Vi
“The e:HEV L, on the other hand, is essentially the same car but more expensive and probably not worth the extra money unless you consider amenities like rain-sensing wipers, dual-zone automatic climate control and a heated steering wheel to be crucial features.”
“You might get a car that better suits your needs with something like the base ZR-V, but you won’t get hybrid technology in that vehicle unless you pay more and move up the price range.
“The only real criticism is that it is quite expensive, but if you can get past that, the HR-V e:HEV X is well worth a look.”

1. Zeeker XD
Senior staffer Matt Campbell’s review of the top-of-the-line Zeekr model, published in January
Matt Campbell wrote:
“This is a largely impressive first offering from a new brand in our market.
“It has some excellent features and is priced appropriately for a truly premium EV experience. It is distinctive, different and desirable in its own way.”
“But it’s also quite frustrating and thoughtless when it comes to some engineering and design decisions, and the overbearing nature of the driver safety equipment makes the Zeekr X seem like a great car that might be difficult to live with.”
“Whether that’s enough to rule it out or rule it out for you is a matter of taste.”
