Chery has confirmed that a dual-cab utility will be joining its range before the end of 2026, initially launching with a plug-in hybrid diesel powertrain – and with the promise of real off-road capability.
Although Chery hasn’t given the ute a name yet, it’s clear that the company has invested significantly in the vehicle’s development, suggesting that the powertrain and off-road technology is unlikely to be limited to a single model.
Chery executives remained tight-lipped when asked Daily Sparkz about the possibility of an SUV version of the ute to compete against the Ford Everest.

However, these digital illustrations by artist Theottle provide a glimpse of what a seven-seat off-road SUV from Chery could look like.
Like the ute – known by the internal model code KP31 – the SUV could be the first in its segment to be powered by a diesel engine with plug-in hybrid technology, offering a significant competitive advantage over SUVs that combine plug-in hybrid technology with small petrol engines.
Chery hasn’t released full details of the ute at this stage, but the model will feature front, center and rear limited-slip differentials, off-road terrain modes and a low-range gearbox.
Chery is also believed to be working on a feature that will allow the vehicle to make tight turns on loose surfaces – similar to Ford’s Trail Turn Assist.
“(Australia is) a market that values real-world performance (and) reliability – and we are committed to shaping the future of new energy and intelligent vehicles,” Chery Australia chief operating officer Lucas Harris said.
“We need to use technologies that are practical, proven and relevant to customers.”
Chery has yet to confirm whether there will be an off-road SUV next season, but it is unlikely that such a model will launch before 2027.
