OpenAI is apparently testing a feature that would make achieving repeated conversations easier: ChatGPT for Android home screen shortcuts, which open a specific thread directly from your launcher.
Android Authority discovered the change in an APK teardown of ChatGPT for Android, version 1.2025.350. In this build, a chat’s menu displays an “Add to Home Screen” action, suggesting that OpenAI is experimenting with a faster way to resume ongoing chats that you rely on for recurring tasks.
Maintaining a thread for a daily workflow, a long-running project, or iterative prompt chains are the kind of small UI tweaks that can save time every day.
Where the option lives
The APK teardown revealed that you can access the feature from the three-dot menu in a specific chat. Tap “Add to Home Screen” and Android will create a launcher shortcut that acts like a regular app icon, except it targets that one conversation.
Currently, the shortcut name is automatically taken from the chat title and there is no option to rename it during setup. The option appears to support adding an unlimited number of chat shortcuts, with the expectation that tapping one of them will open the chat directly rather than directing you through the app first.
Why shortcuts are better than pinning
ChatGPT lets you pin conversations already in the app (and web), which is helpful if you’re already in ChatGPT. A shortcut on the home screen changes the entry point, turning your most important chats into one-tap destinations in the launcher itself.
This difference is important when reusing the same thread for a recurring task, such as: B. planning, writing or tracking an ongoing task. Instead of searching, scrolling, or relying on pinned placement in the app, just tap the icon and move on.
When can this be expected?
This appears to be more of a testing feature than something that every Android user can enable today. Android Authority notes that it is not yet generally available, although it can be made to work with tweaks, and no public launch date is specified.
As it expands, the details to watch are practical: whether OpenAI adds the rename, whether restrictions appear, and whether the shortcut reliably opens the correct chat every time. Until then, it’s best to keep your most important threads organized in the app and keep an eye on upcoming Android updates for the Add to Home Screen menu item.
