The BYD Shark 6 The Cab chassis has received government approval for sale in Australia.
Approved late last week, the Shark 6 cab chassis retains key dimensions and capabilities of the existing Shark 6, including a 3260mm wheelbase and a braked towing capacity of 2500kg.
With a curb mass of 2,565kg – 110kg less than the existing model with factory shelf – and an unchanged GVM of 3,500kg, the cab chassis can accommodate a payload of 935kg, including the owner-installed shelf or storage area.

As expected, the cab chassis will use a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a 135kW 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine at its heart.
In the existing ute, the plug-in hybrid system has a total output of 321 kW and 650 Nm. It is connected to a 29.6 kWh battery that provides an electric range of 100 km.
The timing has yet to be confirmed by BYD, but given the recent approval, an early 2026 launch seems likely. The company is also said to be working on a more powerful variant with a 2.0-liter plug-in hybrid drive.
The cab chassis will most likely lower the entry price of the Shark 6 range and allow BYD to target fleets and increase its appeal to tradesmen.
The BYD Shark 6, which was launched at the end of last year, has taken off. This year, 15,181 Shark 6s were purchased by the end of October.
It currently sits fourth in the 4×4 ute category behind the Ford Ranger (43,924), Toyota HiLux (38,168) and Isuzu D-Max (17,905) and ahead of the Mitsubishi Triton (13,702) and Mazda BT-50 (9864).
