Blizzard is officially bringing the Overwatch universe to mobile devices and has just released a first look at gameplay. Overwatch Rush is a new game designed specifically for phones that reimagines Overwatch as a fast-paced, top-down hero shooter for short gaming sessions.
Blizzard’s announcement confirms that Overwatch Rush is still in early development. Unlike previous experiments, this is not a scaled-down port of Overwatch 2.
According to Blizzard, the game is being developed from the ground up for mobile devices, with controls, pacing and game length designed specifically for iOS and Android devices.
A mobile-first version of the Overwatch heroes
Overwatch Rush is set in the familiar Overwatch universe with a top-down perspective that focuses on fast movement, skill-driven combat, and hero-based playstyles.
According to Blizzard, games should feel fast and flexible and support both single player and team play. Controls are described as intuitive, with systems tailored more towards touch input than controllers.
Overwatch Rush is designed for hero-centric combat and customization while still fitting into bite-sized sessions. The first gameplay footage shows familiar heroes such as Tracer, Soldier 76, Mercy, Reinhardt, Reaper and Lucio in action, each with recognizable abilities.
The game is being developed by a Blizzard team separate from Team 4, the group behind Overwatch 2. Blizzard says this international team has extensive experience in mobile game development and will have no influence on the development of the main game.
Overwatch Rush will be free to play with optional in-game purchases, but Blizzard has not yet announced a release window. Blizzard is positioning the project as a new entry point into the universe rather than a companion app.
Ubisoft has now officially released Rainbow Six Mobile worldwide for Android and iOS. It’s a free-to-play tactical shooter with classic 5v5 gameplay, 24+ operators, multiple maps and competitive modes for players on the go.
