I’m so close to finishing our bedroom. I just have a few more items to check off my list before it’s finished, and I’ve reached the point of the project where it feels like a big lull, because while I continue to work on these projects every day, I don’t have really exciting progress to share with you every day. So this is the point in the project where I get asked questions like, “Wait a minute. Did I miss the bedroom reveal? Are you ready?”
No, you didn’t miss anything. It’s so close, but it’s not quite there yet. Here are the things I still have on my bedroom “to-do” list.
First I have to hem all four curtain panels. All four panels are sewn and hanging, but they look really sloppy at the moment because they aren’t hemmed, and I still need to attach the back panels to the wall.
Generally, I simply make all of my curtain panels for a window or room to a specific length and then hang them. However, since the floors in this particular room are the uneven floors in our entire house, I decided that the hem of each panel would need to be pinned when hanging so that they would look right for that particular area in the room. If I sewed them all to the same length, some would look right while others would look too long or too short. *Sigh* If for no other reason, I’m so glad to be done with this room so I don’t have to deal with those uneven floors anymore. Once everything is finished, I don’t think the uneven floors will be noticeable, but they definitely made this project, from the trim to the curtains, much more challenging.
The other very obvious project I still need to do is covering the attic access.
This is one of those projects that I’ve been procrastinating on because I’m afraid of it. However, I have no idea why. I literally have three pieces of trim to put on. That’s it. Only three trim pieces. It will probably take me a full hour to complete the whole thing, including caulking and painting. And yet I put it off for so long. I don’t know why there are projects that I’m so afraid of, even though I know they’re super easy to complete.
And then I have to paint my little side table. I tried with a wood look surface, but I still realize it’s a metal table, so that’s not enough. I’ll paint it gold and be done with it.
This is a pretty simple project, but I really should have done it before the weather broke. Now I just have to wait until it’s warm enough so I can go outside and paint. I hope to do that tomorrow. It’s expected to be in the 60s tomorrow afternoon, so I can’t miss that window.
And the last big project (which isn’t really difficult) is that I want to make a duvet cover out of the bird fabric. I already have the two large pillows that my mother made for me from the bird fabric…
But from the beginning I wanted the fabric with the birds to stand out more in the room. I waited to see how the room would shape up to make my final decision on how I wanted to use the rest of the fabric. At first I thought I could reupholster the second bench from the breakfast room with the bird fabric and place it at the foot of the bed. But now that we’ve been living in this room for a few weeks, I’ve decided that I don’t want or need another piece of furniture here.
Then I thought about making a simple throw or small quilt with the extra fabric. But after thinking about it for a bit longer, I finally decided to just make a duvet cover out of it. And since I want it to match the pillows – bird fabric with green trim – I had to order more green fabric to cut out the duvet cover. I have everything I need for this now and hope to get this done in the next few days. This is my first time making a duvet cover, but I can’t imagine it being difficult.
And then I just need to do a few random finishing touches, like painting the outlet covers (which are all still striped from my home gym days) and adding a piece of trim to the front of the door to cover up the random cut edges of the hardwood floor that weren’t covered when the door was installed. These things are all very quick and easy.
This is what my final hit list looks like:
- Hem the fabric panels and attach the ends to the walls.
- Cut out the attic access;
- Paint the side table;
- Make a duvet cover;
- Paint the outlet covers.
- Add trim on the door.
So the list is getting smaller and smaller and it’s almost finished! I don’t know if I’ll reach my goal of finishing by the end of this month (I’m putting that down to me getting sick and being out of commission for about four days), but I’ll be very close! If everything goes as planned, I believe I will have this project completed by the beginning or middle of next week. And then on to the studio bathroom!
