iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max users are experiencing something very unusual: a faint hissing or static noise comes from the phone’s speakers while charging.
According to a report from MacRumors, citing discussions on Reddit, Apple’s Community Support, and its own discussion forum, affected users are noticing a hissing sound or noise when their phone is charging (via a wired or MagSafe charging solution) and the screen is active. When you unplug the iPhone, the sound stops.
Subtle, but hard to ignore once you hear it
While some users report that they hear an unusual noise when they play an audio track through the iPhone 17 Pro’s speakers and turn down the volume, others claim that the noise (like static from a radio) is audible when the phone is idle. In fact, some users have reported that they hear the sound even when the iPhone is not charging.
Although the problem is not widespread (at least at the moment), it is big enough to receive sufficient coverage. Some users hear a hissing or static noise all the time, others just randomly, while many don’t experience the problem at all, suggesting that it only affects a limited number of iPhone 17 Pro users.
While you may not hear the subtle hiss in a noisy environment, it may become more noticeable when you plug in your phone at night in a quiet bedroom. Even though the problem may not appear to impact day-to-day operations, it raises questions about possible causes and workarounds.
According to reports, some users have swapped their iPhones for new ones only to encounter the problem again. The report also mentions that Apple Support is aware of the issue and has escalated it to its engineers.
If the problem is related to a software bug, such as power regulation or audio driver malfunction, an OTA update could silently fix the problem. However, if this is not the case, the company should provide a free replacement. So far Apple has not recognized the problem.
At launch, the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro also had specific camera issues that Apple later fixed.
