Apple iPhone users may be able to watch videos on their car’s infotainment screens CarPlay when the next update for iOS is available.
The official Apple CarPlay developer page now lists “AirPlay Video in Car” as a feature that programmers can add to their apps, allowing users to stream video from an iPhone app to their car’s infotainment display.
Of course, for safety reasons, users must be parked to watch videos on their car’s infotainment system via CarPlay.

In addition, the video playback function must be activated on the head unit by the car manufacturer. At the time of writing, no automaker has committed to enabling video playback via CarPlay in their vehicles.
It’s also not clear whether automakers will allow the feature on existing vehicles or only on new cars or new models.
Accordingly MacRumorsThe latest iOS 26.4 beta, released to developers last week, includes new references to in-car video playback, as well as related notifications, onboarding flows, and a notification informing the user to subscribe to the Apple TV service (formerly Apple TV+) on their phone when not driving to watch subscription content.

Although it looks like video playback support could be available as early as iOS 26.4, Apple has a history of including features in a beta only to remove them when the final version is released, usually because the product still needs more work.
The rumor mill says iOS 26.4 is expected to go live in late March or early April.
Video playback for Android Auto was announced back in May 2025, but the feature has not yet been released and there is no time frame for its availability.
Some cars whose infotainment systems run on the Android Automotive operating system, such as Polestar, already support video playback, with users able to download apps such as YouTube and Prime Video via the Play Store.
